Man I can't get past how well the antiquity's sound in my R9. They are just so smooth. Dammit they sound old. Anybody else drop these in any guitar?

I will have 'em, at least the neck pickup. I don't care for the 57Classic neck pickup. What do you guys think of the bridge tone?

Bridge

I think I like the bridge pickup the most. Depending on your pick attack and amp it can sound like a single coil fender or heavy metal crank with everything in between. It has that hollow breath sound with a flat out Marshall. Nail any Classic rock song. Get them both! Trust me.

The neck pickup is not dark like most. It took me a moment to get used to it. It has an upfront sound. Roll back the tone pot with the Gudeman and your in woman tone heaven.

IMO. Best $200 anyone could spend.

Got mine here:

Great pickups. I like the bridge one to read at least 8.5k. Ive had many. I like real PAFs better, but they are my next favorite. They tend to be a little softer and less middy than the real deal. Thats why Ive found Ive needed a bit higher output reading on them, than I might use with a PAF. -Ed

Ed,

What DC coil resistance do you like to see for the neck?

And while I'm thinking of it, if anyone has a set they want to sell, drop me an email.

i've got them in my R9 and love them. my set is a 7.49K neck and 8.54K bridge. perfectly balanced. they made a pretty notable difference over the 57 classics. the thing i like about them is that they've got a bright, open sound without being harsh (like the 57 classics), especially in the bridge. i actually just picked up a set of double white seth lovers, but opted to put them in my honey burst LP standard. although they would have looked especially great in the R9, i couldn't bring myself to change the R9 because it sounds perfect to me with the antiquities.

I'm with Ed A. about the PAF's...if you can afford em, and your lucky enough to get some that have great tone, they're a match made in "Woodheaven" ...though, if I ever had another LP that needed a p/u transfusion, I'd definitely go with the antiquities, I've heard nothing but great thing's about them in the vintage tone area. Still...there's something very mojo about real PAF's that just work for that vintage vibe thing. My neck zebra has the sweetest hollow paf tone I've heard, coupled with the wood, weight, electric's, strings, setup, and amp...there's a lot more to it than just a p/u to get good tone....it's a long and often very rewarding journey!....especially for tweaker's like myself :peep

PAF's

Ed, the zebra in the neck is a 7.87k and sounds great! Although I've argued with Jim Rolph about the white in the bridge only being 7.72k, he told me I'd be an idiot if I pulled it out of there. I told him that I'd like to try a 8k or better in the bridge and he told me I was crazy, he told me that the readings on that particular p/u was not as important as the tone. He said it had a great magnet in it and the tone of it was definitely for the bridge. It has a bright tone and ring's harmonics so clear with a lot of punch with strong pick attack. He told me to just roll the tone a bit if I'd prefer it a little darker....which I'd have to agree. with this particular combination of p/u's and their respective positions, in the mid toggle position the guitar sound's very 335ish...kinda cool. I'd still like to swap em around someday...though Jim has convinced me to keep it that way for now zebra/neck, and white/bridge.....he said give em the benefit of the doubt, and play for a while like that....they do sound great though, no doubt about it!

So where can one aquire "real" PAF's? I see everyone posting about PAF's but does anyone really own any? Is their a dealer or store with them? Or is it a hit and miss type of thing? What other pup's come close to their tone/sound? How about the aforementioned antiquity's? Thanks for any input!

Dewey!

So, you sold your Y2k R9 to Ed? How's 99R9?

Yes, I did sell the Y2K. It was a difficult decision to sell anything but, still..In order to accomplish what I needed to do, it was necessary. I still have the '99R9 from you, I have the vintage PAF"s in it and thought it was going to be more trouble to sell it with the PAF's in it at the time. I'd probably get more if I sold them separately, and that meant taking them out of the guitar and resoldering in more '57's, and I would have had to buy another because I disected one in the name of science...just to see what make's them tic on the inside! So it just turned out to be more trouble than just selling the Y2K...Ed got a great guitar! I really liked it, and played and sounded great too!
The '99 sound's terrific with the zebra and white paf's, I like the way that guitar plays as well, and the flame is nice on it also. I'm sure that I could get $3,000 or more for the paf's alone, it's pretty difficult to find whites or zebras, especially with great tone, I know, because it took me over a year to get the ones I ended up with. I have an immediate buyer for the guitar anytime I want to sell, and the paf's I've been asked many times if I wanted to sell them for a great price. At this time though, I plan on keeping it for a while....but all bet's could be off in a minute if something came up more important. I'm not that attached to guitars as much as I was last year when I had a few. Now I'm just down to the '99R9 and my '57 AV RI Strat and a couple of vintage amps. Though I play em just about every day...there's just other things more important in my life than guitar's and such. One thing is for certain though....I'll always have "a" guitar around to play at least!
