• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Any Rickenbacker fans here?

I want to love 'em, but I just can't get along with them. Hate the necks, hate the cheesy handmade klugeness about them. Love the 4001. The 12s are great when someone else is playing it.

Here are mine:

Funny, the fast, narrow necks and the fact that they're still made using a lot more of hand work than most are reasons I love them.

Rickenbackers are still essentially Rickenbackers, I admire a lot how John Hall has managed to keep RIC a true Californian family company.

I need to re-figure out how to share files off my phone - 'cause yes I'm a Ric fan (obviously) and I have a couple nice ones. :)

I love the 4001, I owned a 4003 for a bit but it lacked the 'charm' of it's predecessor. Easily in my top 10 basses for tone in studio and generally fun to play.

Had my 4001 since 78. Last year, I got a 330, and its versatility surprised me. I put it through my AC30, and I've got the clasic Ric stuff. Put it through a good OD pedal and then if you want, a delay or whatever--it takes pedals really well but still retains the Ric tone.

Some cool guitars here. I have a 330 in fireglow and a dark blue almost black 620.

I started off as a bass player. Around '73 or so I bought a used 4001 bass, played it for a few years and sold it later. Around '76 I bought a new 4000 (single pickup) model bass and I actually preferred that one over the 4001 model. Jeez, I look at what Ric's are going for now and what I paid for mine way back then. Paid $375.00 for the used 4001 and paid $400.00 for the new 4000. Too bad I didn't have the smarts to hang onto both. Chances are I could get a nice little chunk of change if I sold them now. But I was in my 20's back then and the thought of them being worth something one day never crossed my mind.

Years later I started learning guitar and somewhere around 2002 I bought a new 330 model. Drop dead beautiful looking guitar but I just couldn't get used to the neck. I also found the high E string to be very weak compared to the other strings. Wound up selling that one. As with the 2 basses, I should have hung onto the 330 as well to sell later.

All in all I think Ric guitars and basses are some of the best looking out there. I still love the look off the 325's like John Lennon used to play. Tried one out once and talk about hand cramp!

The most common complaint I hear from Ric 330 players is the neck. I have large hands, but I can't play baseball bat necks. For some reason, the Ric neck feels better to me than my Fenders or Gibson. My 4001 feels good in my hands, but I prefer the necks on my Jazz Basses. I'm not sure why I prefer small necks. I can't understand why with my large hands that I don't get on better with bigger necks.
