• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Finding the right drum kit that meets your goals of sounding great, being unique, and inspiring great music is a journey in itself. Those Gretsch Catalina drums may not have hit the mark, but it's fantastic that you stumbled upon an old set of Gretsch drums that brought that Americana/folk sound to life. Vintage vibes can truly elevate the music-making experience. Even though this response is a bit late, I hope your search for a Rogers kit with a 20" kick drum was successful. Those hidden underpriced gems can bring so much joy. And speaking of drums, have you ever considered exploring the world of bodhran drum? They're unique Irish drums that can add a touch of Celtic charm to your collection.

Thanks for the reply! I ended up buying two sets of Rogers drums. One is the 1960s in red onyx, which sounds perfect for many styles. The 20" kick is the best kick I've ever recorded. The other is a set of Big Rs with early serial numbers. I found them in an antique place for $200. Eventually, I'll get them all done up.

I don't have a ton of different people in my studio because I mainly am working on guitars, mixing, or writing but now and again I'll get people that want to come in. My goal was to have a kit that (1) would sound great (2) would be unique and hold its value (3) inspire great music. For example, if you go to a studio and they have some cool vintage guitar instead of a new Ibanez or something.

Here's my DW kit with Paste cymbals - I don't really play much, but have the kit in my music room so that drummers don't have to lug their gear over for rehearsals.
