Today for the first time in my life i've noticed how much
The cord is a major influence on the overall sound..
I played all sorts of cables but today I pluged one Ernie
Ball that I had and BOY the notes just jumped out of my
Laney VC-30,dynamic like hell...so unfortunately I can't
Get a hold of an EB cable in my country these days I ask
You guys - are the Dimarzios (which are available here)
Will be as good ? Thanks Alot!

All I care about concerning my cables is that the cable is Belden and the ends are Switchcraft. I don't care who stamps their name on it as long as those criteria are met.

what brands use Belden?

Quite a few. It has "Belden Wire and Cable" stamped on the sheath in white lettering most of the time.

Dimarzio

I seem to remember Dimarzio coming out pretty high in the cable shootout GP did a few years ago...

Second to George L but first in resistance to damage which included dropping a cymbal on the leads edge on. The particular Dimarzio was a vintage cloth covered one. I've had one for years. Great sounding but a bit prone to tangling in out magnificent UK temperatures. Fine on those 4 days a year when it is warm.

I bought a Dimarzio back when GP did the shootout and used it up until it got a crackly connection about 6 months ago. I started using another Dimarzio I had bought as a spare and sent the broken one back to them. A couple of weeks later I got a brand new cable from Dimarzio for free under the lifetime warrantee. I'm pretty picky and have tred a lot of cables but there is something about the sound with the Dimarzio that I like. I've measured the capacitance in the Dimarzio cables and it is lower than the Belden cables I have (at the same length). It's not as low as George L's (which I use between pedals and from the pedals to the amp) but the George L's feel too "wimpy" to me from the guitar to the pedals. A lot of people actually like a little high end roll-off from a higher capacitance cable to warm up their tone some. The "sweet switch" on the early PRS guitars was to reproduce the effect of a long cable's capacitance.

There was a very in depth review in Vintage Guitar earlier this year. Sensibly, they didn't rate one cable as "better" they rated them over the frequency spectrum and talked about where each cable would be useful. There're some VERY high end cables out there (I've seen audiophool cables on the high side of $500 for a couple of feet to connect a cd transport and amp) but they tend to sound too dry for guitar work. I don't remember the details and it's a long article. Is it on the net anywhere?

DiMarzio Cables

DiMarzio is one of the few companys currently ultrasonically welding the cable to the connector instead of crimping or soldering. They are quite tone savy in constructing cables. About 7 or 8 years ago they were silver soldering their cables to the connectors because it was a more sonically transparent connection than tin/lead solder or a mechanical crimp. They found recently that an ultrasonic weld was even superior to the silver solder. Can't beat their customer service either.

That's really interesting. The audiophile research suggests that connections made directly to the wire, under pressure, are the most transparent electrically. That is, things that are crimped or better, screwed into place. Solder is a distant second since it sets up two interfaces (wire/solder and solder/connector) that introduce some capacitance. Of course, I'm not sure I have the ears to hear those kind of differences...

I have a dimarzio braided cable. It's a good cable, no complaints.

But if you're looking into decent cables, buy Planet Waves. AWESOME cables. You'll notice a difference in tone (for the better) with these for sure.

I've had a Dimarzio braided cable for 3 or 4 years, with 150-200 gigs during that time and no problems. I'm happy with it--it's lasted many times longer than other 'lifetime' cables I tried.

It's very true that the cable can change your sound. I have a set of Monster Cables that I have used forever it seems. I remember the 1st time I tried them. It was like a woven cross-over, I could all of a sudden hear more things, more clearly, instead of all jumbled up together.

Which model Planet Waves Cables are you folks using? They have three different varieties on their website?

I use a Dimarzio tweedy-retro cable to my TS9 and George L's inbetween anything else - into the amp. Never had any trouble with it - 2 years so far...
