A sad story about a mate of mine who has a '59 175, he left it up against his amp one night at practice(as you do) and down it fell to the floor, snapped the headstock around the nut area, got it fixed however so still in action.175 is on list want list…
That’s a very sad tale.. and we’ve all been through it.. in fact whenever I get a guitar.. guaranteed I’ll scratch it or chip it.. within a week.. it’s become the e norm for me.. even though I’m careful with my guitars. Even my new gold top has a new chip (on the side horn area) as a picture randomly fell off the wall onto the guitar.. ffs.A sad story about a mate of mine who has a '59 175, he left it up against his amp one night at practice(as you do) and down it fell to the floor, snapped the headstock around the nut area, got it fixed however so still in action.

I’ve enquired with Gibson M2M about getting a replica of Joe Pass’s 175 (one of) M2M which is a little thinner but not as thin as a 175t and the neck pickup butts up to the neck..
I’m not holding my breath… as I’ve pestered them for ages to do a limited run.. and they state they don’t have any record of the build.. pfft.

I do believe there’s ghosts in my house.. of past guitars.. which are upset that I let them go..Poltergeist in your home ??
With the Joe Pass M2M just keep at them and at them, that's all you can do, one day it will happen !!
I've got my 'perfect' guitar in my future purchases, that's a cherry 330L with a fat neck. Got one the other month a Memphis '11, however the neck is slim taper, all it needed was an extra 1/4" or so in neck depth and it would have been ace, so I'll keep hammering them also..........on it goes![]()
Unless you are a serious Jazzbo, or have a ton of guitars of all different flavors, I'd caution you against having that pickup right against the neck. That’s a very sad tale.. and we’ve all been through it.. in fact whenever I get a guitar.. guaranteed I’ll scratch it or chip it.. within a week.. it’s become the e norm for me.. even though I’m careful with my guitars. I appreciate the thought.. but.. when playing my guitars, tele, LP, 345, I only ever use the neck pick up.. and have done for decades.. when I need a tone change for solos/parts etc I simply engage an eq pedal, boost or one of two overdrives (or both) with 8% or 25% crunch.. to suit.Unless you are a serious Jazzbo, or have a ton of guitars of all different flavors, I'd caution you against having that pickup right against the neck.
I'm convinced that that little space on my 175 is what keeps it from being a one-trick pony and makes it a versatile, all-night Blues gigger.
Me, too!I appreciate the thought.. but.. when playing my guitars, tele, LP, 345, I only ever use the neck pick up.. and have done for decades.. when I need a tone change for solos/parts etc I simply engage an eq pedal, boost or one of two overdrives (or both) with 8% or 25% crunch.. to suit.
I’m the “one trick pony” in this equation tbh and I believe this is why Joe Pass had this 175 made.
I don’t even change my finger position either.. I think it comes from playing bass over the neck pickup (and just before the pickup, on the neck) the deeper sound is what I like.. I 95% play clean, with the my amp eq very flat (3-5 on the bass and treble).. unless I’m toying with the blues and engage the overdrive. It doesn’t matter which guitar I play.. I always achieve the same sound lolMe, too!
I can go all night without so much as going to the middle position.
I dime the treble controls on the amp, have a boost that accentuates highs on most of the time, and control the tone from the guitar.
This is why I can get everything I want from my 1 pickup ES175...even the occasional Hot Rod Lincoln if I pick close enough to the bridge, which, a lot of folks don't realize.
If you pick where the bridge pickup would be (or is), it sounds a lot like a bridge pickup!
An uncle of mine may have had one of those. It's been years and years, but I remember it being a big hollowbody with the two P90's. Can't remember if the cutaway was pointed or more rounded. I'm quite sure he said it was from the 1950's. He eventually gave it to one of his daughters a while back.

Racking my brain trying to remember when I last saw it before he parted with it. Mid 90's, I think. Can't remember.
Thanks! The more I think about, I'm quite sure it was the pointed cutaway. Just can't remember what year it was.175s always had the pointed cutaway, if that helps
With 2 pups likely '53 to early '57 when they went to PAFs. Bet it was a beautyThanks! The more I think about, I'm quite sure it was the pointed cutaway. Just can't remember what year it was.
