• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Brand new Standard 60s or used Custom Shop 58?

Hello there!

I would love to get some input here.

I’m about to buy a Les Paul. I have been looking at a brand new Les Paul Standard 60s. It’s about 2500USD where I’m from. But I also got the chance to go for a 2014 Custom Shop Les Paul Reissue 1958, for 29000USD. The CS looks to be in very good condition.

Normally I tend to prefer smaller necks, but I also enjoy chunkier necks.

I know the bran new one have the option to split the humbucker to single coil. Does the CS have that feature?

Does anyone have any thoughts on this decision?

Thanks

neither the 58 reissue or the new 60's LP standard have the coil tap option.
I think it will boil down to which guitar you prefer more.
which guitar has the more preferable color and flame top?
if you have the opportunity to play them both before buying I would (as well as many others) suggest playing them both and see which guitar speaks to you more.
the 2 different necks sizes can be a real deciding factor based on what you truly like more.
I am also guessing you accidentally added an extra zero in the 58 reissue price and it is 2,900USD and not 29,000USD. if thats not the case save the money and get the 60's standard.
I know I really didn't help but it's a tough call sometimes when trying to decide between 2 guitars.

good luck with you decision.

If you can eliminate the necks as being a part of the buying decision ( you enjoy both) and the instruments cannot be played prior, then I'd go the pre owned CS as it represents better value for money.
That said, 'value for money' is not a criteria for every buyer. Guitars sell at all price points irrespective of performance.

Unfortunately I’m unable to play them before buying. yes, an 0 too much there. Correct price is 2900USD.

Thanks for the input guys! I decided to go for the Custom Shop. I guess It’ll be easier to sell this one without a loss then a brand new one if it turns out it’s not the one for me. Super excited! Will post pictures when I get it in a few days.

Good choice! R8 all day. $2900 is a steal. That guitar is worth considerably more than that if it is indeed in “very good condition”. You’d never lose money on that guitar at that price (whereas the brand new Standard 60s will immediately be worth less as soon as you buy it). Plus you get all their perks of a CS guitar.

58CS, it’s my only “custom” shop guitar and comparing it to my Gibson USA les Paul special, I can notice a difference in build quality and attention to detail.

I know this is a les Paul forum, but I can’t tell much difference between Fender Custom shop and Fender vintage reissues(production line), however, on Gibsons, I really can notice the difference and it’s worth the extra expense to go for them.
