• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

I haven't had her out in about 6 months - just rotating guitars through. WOW am I glad I do everytime. This has always been my number ONE HB loaded LP. She's a 72 Deluxe that was modded for HBs. I bought her that way. She cam loaded with original Pat Sticker T-Tops - which are maybe the best humbuckers I've ever heard (Fralins a close second). This guitar just RINGS. Sandwich body and everything!

Anyway - I rocked out on her for about 2 hours tonight and she just SANG into my Bad Cat Hot Cat 30R head. Super swirly tones when I let chords ring. Now, the amp does part of that but - not every guitar swirls like this one does! Just wanted to share my rocking feeling right now. She's the one in the middle below, 80 Silver Burst 3 pickup Custom on the left, 95 Custom Shop Custom 3 pickup model (loaded w/RS Fralins) on the right!

I've had good luck with Norlin era LPs!!!!

Cool! As much as I hate to see a guitar modded like that it is nice to hear the mod didn't mess with the guitar in a bad way. How much does that beauty weigh?

Thanks. Like I said - I bought her that way. Weight - don't know. I've never had it on the scale. My guess would be somewhere between 8-9lbs. Much lighter than my 80 Silverburst, and WAY lighter than my NUMBER ONE LP which is my 81 LP Pro Deluxe which I swear is 13lbs!!!! (I haven't had her on the scale).

I actually like a little weight though. I'm 6 ft, 200 lbs - so I like the girth of a good LP. I've got a couple Tele's in the 6lb range that almost feel to light strapped on.

You are a very sick boy with all of those 'non-traditional' LPs. Cool colors!

BTW, has the '80 Silverburst greened overy time? Starting to look fairly Geco.

Had my '70 routed Deluxe out this morning. T-Top in bridge, Shaw in neck.
Thin neck, great playing LP. Great T-Top tone. Learned "The Wanton Song" correcly on it last night.

wow, that silverburst sure greened up!

That deluxe looks cool. Did the black custom come with nickel (or chrome....)? Or did it come with gold hardware, and get changed out.

No offense, but I gotta have gold hw on black customs. Just my preference.

Maybe I'm being a hard-ass, but isn't a Deluxe with humbuckers just a Standard? Kind of like an Esquire with a neck pickup is a a Telecaster. :) Having said that, very cool guitar. I do love my '70 Deluxe (with mini humbuckers).:dude:

Yes, early Norlins are very underrated here. Most of them are great guitars with character.

How would you compare it with Silverburst Custom soundwise?

If it was born a Deluxe, always a Deluxe.

Even though it has been large-buckered, I agree.

I agree with you on the girth thing Sickboy, I am 6'5" and 200+ lbs, but my old bones like to max a guitar out at about 8 lbs. I have a PRS Ted McCarty DC 245 and just can't get along with it because at 7.5 lbs it's just too light. I had a Warmoth Strat body made and it is even lighter. Wish I would have specified a heavier weight on that body. I don't do the Fender sound very often so I get by with it, when needed.

Anyway, thems some sweet guitars. Each unusual and major cool!

Back then if you bought a Deluxe that wasn't already converted chances were pretty good your next purchase would be a B&D router just kind of the way it was, everyone was searching for the bigger fatter tone. Lot of pretty nice old Deluxe era models morphed into Standards, you could buy em pretty reasonable. This was also before Gibby had reintroduced the Standard or brought out Pro w/ the P90's a route a lot of us should have done in the first place if you could find the P90's vs going down the router road.

Also, when the Standard offcially came back out in '76, it had a maple neck.
Not a bad thing, just different. The early 70's Deluxes have mahogany necks. I would not have routed mine, but the bridge was already routed when I bought it in '75 or' 76 (summer before 8th grade). I am a fan of the early 70's Deluxes.

I have a 71 Deluxe that was already routed. Its the best Les paul I've played. Even thoughI LOVE the look of Customs, the Deluxe feels better. I cant understand why people knock Norlins, the early ones are fantastic .

Thanks! Yeah - she's green with a hint of gold alright! Funny - I've owned the guitar since 1990, and it was that way when I got it. I honestly haven't noticed any change since then. She's a fun guitar too.

The black one with the blue "hot rod" sparkle ghost flames came with the chrome hardware.

The Silverburst is a bit brighter/snappier sounding. It's got an almost piano like bottom end to it on the wound strings. It has more focus to the tone. The Deluxe is warmer and a bit fuller/thicker sounding. I dig em both.
