For all interested the Gibson Custom trailer is coming up from Nashville and will be stocked with all kinds of figured maple, neck blanks, and mahogany backs for customers to pick through and order your custom build this weekend Friday 10/9 and Saturday 10/10 only. I was told this was Tommy's idea, owner of the Zoo to do this and he thought this would be very cool to try it. If this is success and I think it may be I can see other dealers wanting to get in on this and do it. Bring the check book! Oh and if you cant be there in person they will post some tops in real time on the web for you to call in and order your build. Gibson reps will also be on site taking the orders I was told. By appointment ONLY! :salude :3zone

FROM THE MUSIC ZOO SITE:

Gibson Custom Shop will be at The Music Zoo on October 9 & 10, 2015 with the Custom Shop Trailer stocked full of figured maple! This is your chance to come by, dig through the piles, and select just the right piece of wood for your Custom Build. Select flame or quilt for the solid body or archtop of your dreams. Been ready to buy a Les Paul but have not seen just the right top? Now is your chance!

You will need to book an appointment by contacting our sales staff. We want everyone to have the time and space to really select the right wood for their build. Additionally, you’ll meet with Custom Shop insiders who will help in dialing in each and every spec on the guitar. It’s a special event unlike any other we have had. Trust us, it’s fun to dig, select and see the guitar come through as a finished instrument! Email sales@themusiczoo.com now to reserve your time slot, or for more information on the process.

Can’t be in attendance? We’re going to post some of the available wood blanks online on the 9th. They will be available first come first served and we’ll be able to accommodate custom orders over the phone or via email. We’ll update this post with a link to the images at that time and send out an announcement.

Dang...this is a great idea. If a little more notice had been given...I might have done this instead of my recent R8 purchase. Very cool idea....

If I was well-heeled, I would do this. Great idea Gibson! Now, just give me true aniline dye that fades like the old ones....:)

Okay, I've heard this statement many times, and I just have to know.

WHY, Do some insist on aniline dye ?

WHY, Do you want your guitar to fade in UV light ?

Gibson can shoot ANY faded color you would like.

Is it just to get the red under your pickgaurd and poker chip ? They can do that too !

Aniline is toxic, period. Would you also like to bring back lead based paint and asbestos ? :hmm

Oh wait, do you think aniline is one of the principals of Burst Tone ! ? ! :hee

Just curious. :hmm

This is the most awesome event Ive heard of in a long while, but Im betting these one-offs will cost an arm and a leg. It would be great if some of the resulting guitars and corresponding prices were published.

does this include 7 and 8 string les pauls and explorers? fanned fretboards? alternate scale lengths?

Oy vey. I'm not going to bother with answering most of these questions but maybe you can tell me what exactly Gibson is using when they offer "green lemon"?

An educated guess would be, a touch of blue in the yellow. PAINT.

What does that have to do with my post ?

What a great idea. A chance to hand pick your own parts.

I assume Gibson will mark what you pick, toss them in a box and mail you a finished guitar in eight months.

I was thinking the same thing, how much more would a reissue or TH be because they ain't cheap to begin with!

They are again using aniline dye on the pore filler.

People want it, because it is HISTORICALLY ACCURATE maybe?

This is a great idea. I would love to see this done online as a regular option from Gibson. They could use some of the same web techniques that retailers employ, let you pick your wood, color, and model, select your hardware, and show a mock up of the finished product.

I've done this on sites like Harley Davidson and Porsche just for fun. The only problem is my finished products always end up costing more than my home!:hmm

It is a very cool idea and salute to Tommy for coming up with the idea. He deserves all the credit. I don't know the circumstances or time line of how it all came about they did a poor job at promoting it and nobody had any advance notice and knew anything about it. I mean if I had just another weeks notice I would have flew in for this and hang out with the guys from Gibson.

This will be very interesting to say the least. I mean if a TH is already so much loot what will the upcharge be for these? Oh and by the way I would be willing to bet you cant order a TH. Maybe a made to measure historic select but Gibson has said all along dealers and consumers will not be able to pick out tops for TH guitars. So I wonder if they will take back what they said and allow a TH order or build them as HS.

I like the aniline dye. I have a 2010 without and a 2013 with. I like how the dye fades with playing like a good worn in pair of Levis. It is also more aesthetically pleasing than the dye on the 2010. The grain shows through better. I can see why some don't like it. It bleeds into the binding and fades with UV light. Different strokes for different folks.
