Best piece of advice I ever got was to remember that the guitarist is PART of a band and that your value (beyond just being competent at your instrument) is being able to step in/out of the sonic spotlight. I'm still figuring it out, but it's helped me understand live mixing and just my instrument better in general.

One of the best tips I got was from a local guitar legend. He'd hang around the music shop on Saturdays and it was as good as interacting with a celebrity.

One time he heard me overplaying something when I was trying to cover my insecurities with a blanket of notes.

He told me a great guitar lick is like a movie quote. It gets stuck in your head. You might remember it for the rest of your life. It might make a real impact on the way you think about things. And a great movie quote is usually just a sentence. Sometimes even just a few words.
