Thinking about getting one Calton LP case and one for 355 for going out gigging. They're pricey but are they worth it for better protection?

You'll never recover what you spend on it. Unless you're doing heavy travel and entrusting careless people to move your gear, I don't see where you'd get value out of the protection. If you like the aesthetic, than the calculus is whether 70-80% of the price is worth it to you for the looks because you'll only get about 20-30% back if you go to sell.

….unless it’s an old acoustic, in which case the extra protection is worth it

I bought one (used) for my Martin D28. I plan to own that guitar forever and so having a better case than the mediocre factory case made sense. It made even more sense that I was able to buy the case for $700. I think my Gibson cases for Les Pauls and I have a Hummingbird are pretty well made and support he guitars pretty well, and so I have not pursued upgrading the cases for them. If another deal on a used case came along, I'd likely buy another Calton, though.
