lpcust,

there's nothing wrong with running the amp at 8 ohms.
If you want to run two speakers, you may try the Blue together with the TT, given both are 8 ohms, so you'll be back on 16, though at the expense of less speaker breakup.
Give 'em a try and let us know what come out.

Will do. Thanks for the shared knowledge.

I run my 1974x clone with a Blue and a G12H-30 in a 2x12 combo. BEST combo I have ever experienced in 29 years of playing. Yes, I recommend the Blue!! There's a youtube clip if you're interested in hearing what this sounds like.

Great youtube clip! Pretty much everything I want from a Marshall combo.

I would love to get your advice on the GDS stuff, as I'm seriously leaning towards at least his transformers and chassis, but a little confused over some of the options on your amp. Send me an email, if that's cool?

Could you give a link to the youtube video, please? Interesting to see this thread come around again. I still haven't tried a Blue in my 1974X, but hope to some time soon. Thanks for the input. BTW, I asked someone in the know about putting a 15 watt speaker in an 18 watt amp, and they said no problem, the Blues are built tough enough to handle the difference.

i don't want to be a downer, but Blues can blow in low wattage amps. my 5E3 (15 watts) blew my Blue, granted i was using fuzz and wah and putting out probably 28 watts. just some food for thought...

they are some awesome sounding speakers though, plenty of rock in them!!

Well, I finally decided what speaker I'm going to put into my 1974X. Not that there was anything wrong with the stock Celestian, but I had wondered about others, especially the Alnico Blue, but I recently got a JBL D120F, from Ed A, and after it comes back with a fresh recone from Orange County Speakers it will go into my Marshall. I can't wait!!

From my recollection, I understand that the reissue Blue is actually a 30W speaker. I don't know that positively for sure, but I seem to remember hearing that a few years ago. The originals were indeed 15 watts and they are fragile. I know lots of guys on 18watt.com have been running their 18W clones with a single Blue with no typical failures. Occasionally you get one but I think that is the exception rather than the norm. I ran two Blues for a long time in a 2-12 extension cab with an 18W head and never had any troubles. I used that cab lots of times with my 100W Dumble clone but then I never push these too hard so that really isn't saying too much. Also, it is a tight fit for a Blue in a standard 18W cabinet, so check it out carefully.

I have also heard the Blue/G12H30 pair and that does sound very good.

Finally, I think the Heritage G12M Greenback that comes with the 1974X is a very fine speaker.

Also, thanks for the kind words above. :-)

The Celestion Alnico Blue made in England (not the Vox label OEM Celestion Blue that is made in China and found in Vox amps) is a true 15 Watt. The gold is 50W.

The Marshall 1974X sounds great with the Celestion Greenback what it come with. From my experience with both these speakers, I believe the Alnico Blue would sound a little mushy with a 1974X. The Celestion Alnico Blues sound better with the clean sound of a Fender Blackface or a chimey Vox amp to my ears.
