I had to post this 'cause I'm am really diggin' this speaker! I've been interested in the gold for a while, but haven't pulled the trigger until a couple of weeks ago. I have to thank Kerry (j45), for his opinion, which made me realize that I had to check one out.

This speaker has such an amazing top end. So clear and chimey, but not harsh at all. The mids are creamy and it has a nice round low end. My jtm45 clone sounds like a different amp, I can't get over it, just incredible. That "clack" in the attack that Kerry spoke of is exactly what I wanted, I just love it.

A quick clip in the garage. lp/verbzilla (sorry, I needed a little 'verb) jtm45 clone/celestion gold. (the camera mic compresses a lot)

Now I'm interested in a quad of gold 10's for my SR.

I am completely addicted to golds. When I put them up against any other alnico brit-type speaker, they stomp all over them. To my ear (imho), they are basically a dead ringer for the old silver celestion alnicos w/ the 102-003 cones [and I still have two here that I use a basis for comparison). I've tried and tried again to like the Scumback version, and I know they get a lot of praise, but like all Weber-made brit speakers, I hear an over-compressed quality that is too constrictive. Golds are warm and middy and throaty yet completely open and I don't hear them as squashing the dynamics like webers/scumbacks. Don't want to bitch too much about other maker's speakers - everyone has their preferences and all are welcome to think I'm deaf - but for me, the golds are far and beyond absolutely IT.

I think they sound like crap in Fenders. Now there, I think a number of Webers really shine as well as a few - dare I say it - Eminence.

I have Golds in many amps, including a JMI AC30. They do a great job. A little darker and throatier than say a Blue but they retian much of the sparkle I was hoping for whilst adding the higher power capability. I use a Gold and an Anniversary G30H paired in my TopHat Super Deluxe and they're a great match.

Red Fangs are pretty good, but smoother and not so chimy - they work well in Fender amps.

Weber = meh in my view. Had Silver Bells, Blue Dogs, other 10" versions and none of them stacked up well.

I still prefer the sound of a Blue over pretty much anything else though.

I have a Blue in my DRRI. And a Gold in my Traynor YCV20.

I know it's supposed to be the opposite, but the Blue does just fine in the DRRI and sounds lovely pushed a little. The Gold gives me a great clean tone and some depth to that 15 watt Traynor.

Great speakers.

All this talk of pairing Golds with G12H30 Anniv speakers makes me wonder about pulling a pair of the G12H30 Anniv's in my 1960TV and replacing them with Golds. I use a JTM45 that sounds like an old block logo (avatar) and play mostly classic 70's rock with LP, SG and V's. Any thoughts on what that would work out like? Anyone tried it before?

I have one in my Mesa IIC+ combo - brilliant. I pair it to an EV Thiele extension cab, and it's magical. Such a musical pairing.

Interesting. I like the Blue's in some smaller (6V6) Fender's, but never heard a Gold. Is their a big tonal difference between the two speakers?

Sorry to hijack, but Eminence make great speakers, especially for the money. I'll take them over the Italian Jensen's for Fender every time. Their reasonably priced 15' Legend Series (for guitar) is a favorite of mine and Mark Baier of Victoria amps.

I went with a Blue over a Gold in my DRRI. I'd say the Gold is a tad less detailed, with some lower bottom end. But it still has the Blue quality. I couldn't find a better speaker with that wattage, including an Emi Cannabis Rex I liked a lot and a Weber 12f150 which had some cool things going on.

I really love the Fender 6v6 sound, but it can get a bit too strident. The brit character of the Blue really smooths it out and allows it to retain all that beautiful note detail.

Even though I bought that Blue to put in my 15 Watt Traynor YCV20, that amp has always seemed to sound better with a higher watt speaker with a big mag. So the Gold found a home there.

The Blue is rated at 15 watts and the DRRI 22, but I've never heard of single person blowing a Blue in DRRI because blues tend to be underrated. Fender even manufactured a ltd edition DRRI with a Blue in it stock.

It's just a matter of opinion. I like a Marshall to sound like a Marshall and a Fender to sound like a Fender. I like a really clear delineation between the two types of amp. JMHO. I like thick, mid-emphasized speakers in Marshalls and very bright speakers in Fenders. Weber's C12N copies really do it for me in my Deluxes, as does the Emi 1258 which is a VERY bright, clear speaker. My experiments w/ brit speakers in Fenders seems to detract from what I want to hear when I play a Fender, which is a bright, mid-scooped, "blackface" type tone. No doubt they can add mids and tone down some of the piercing qualities of a blackface amp, it's just not what I personally want to hear from my blackface amps.

We should also make note of the increased sensitivity of a gold - if you go from say a greenback to a gold, you are going to notice a pretty evident increase in volume right off the bat!

I would suggest that this combination in that big cab would sound amazingly good!

Oh great, now I need to spend another $600 or so on my habit.:lol Do these bad boys have much of a break in cycle? I had to really abuse my G12H30 Anniversary's with a 1987 for some time to get them to "desterilize" or even sound faintly nice. Now they sound great with the JTM45.

They do require a good break-in before they reveal their true identity. I wasn't very impressed with mine "out of the box". Stiff and sterile, but after 40hrs. hooked up to a variac (at night) and constant loud pounding whenever I had a chance, the speaker totally opened up.

They're expensive, but worth it (imo).

I've heard 5E3 clones with Blue's that sound heavenly, yet not overly "British" in flavor.

I use Golds in a chunky 2x12, giving me a 100w power rating which is really handy.

I have Golds and Heritage G12Hs in a 4x12 which is just the best combination out there for blues/rock. The Anniversary G12Hs I find too harsh, but the 55Hz Heritage G12Hs are the bomb! :headbange
