I saw parts of it a couple weeks ago on T|V> AXS, I think. Really interesting doc. Need to look up the whole thing one of these days.

I always suspected these "hired" band members were getting screwed. This film really confirmed it.

I looked for that movie on Netflix but couldn't find it. The problem is that Netflix has geo-restrictions, and you must use VPN to watch some movies and TV shows. I managed to find that movie on rooomba.tv, however. The movie was decent, but nothing special.
Still, I realized that I don't need Netflix anymore. I can get the same content in HD on rooomba TV. It makes no sense to pay for something you don't need anymore. Netflix was good before, but now it's just not good.

I haven't watched it but I spent the better part of 10 years playing alongside someone who was pretty big. I never thought I was "getting screwed" but it was kind of confusing when there was downtime and the person I was in a van with buys a house in Beverly Hills and I buy a few old guitars. I just had to learn to understand that nobody was shelling out to see me play guitar, they were coming to see that person. Some people have a hard time dealing with that, I didn't. I went from being a broke Berklee student working at UPS loading boxes on trucks to being paid to see the world. Plus, it opened up a lot of doors that I was able to take advantage of.

Now I play about five venues with big tours that come through. Some bands just need an extra guitar player or synth player to flesh out parts they can't replicate live, and some don't have any band at all but want some live aspect to the music.

Many tours don't have the budget for two or three more people, so this is becoming more common. I attribute it to everyone filming everything and people expecting a show rather than a concert. This time of year, I do maybe 2-5 shows a week, and when you figure in prep time, it's sometimes a challenge but I like being able to play with a rapper on Tuesday, an indie band on Thursday and an iconic artist on Saturday. I even played for Joe Biden a few weeks ago. That was a story in and of itself.

Money wise it's better than being on a tour and usually, I sleep in my own bed, but you're not getting the commitment or exposure a longer-term gig would give you. I'm fine with that at this stage in my life.

Plus it's fun to post photos on Facebook and know I have people I know in the crowd on any given night.

It's an amazingly good time to be in the music industry because there's so much opportunity. During Covid it was tough but I went back for my master's degree and my old employer (National Geographic) gave me some freelance work. That and doing guitar parts, mixing and (for people on a super budget) mastering kept me busy. I even did some video game music.

If I've learned one thing doing this for a living it's that there are a ton of really good guitar players but if you can do a few different things (write, engineer, etc...) you'll always have work.

Things come and go on Netflix and other streaming channels, this OP is 5 years ago.

If you are still interested, click on 'More Watch Options' for a title on its IMDB page:

FWIW I abandoned Netflix in the wake of the Cuties pedo-peddling controversy.
