• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Choosing two Marshalls that compliment eachother nicely (clean Vs aggressive)

I have a 1983 Marshall JCM 800 2204 with two channels. The overdrive channel is fantastic for hard-rock, and gets even better with a little push from a tubescreamer in front. I actually also think the clean channel is quite useable. Not Fender-like but still... I also have a Ceriatone clone of av '66 JTM 45 with KT66 powertubes. Fantastic clean tone that goes into a great crunch when driven hard. There's only one thing I miss about that, and that is effectsloop and a built in reverb tank.

Either of Dennis Cornell Plexi iterations 18 watter or 45 watter, with some carefully selected pedals in front will get you where you want to be. Some truly fabulous UK necromancers doing some incredible stuff, Stu Castledine, Origin effects, Audio Kitchen to name but three. I use all three with one amp.

I reckon you could put a superb little rig together for the 2 bags you have to spend.

Let us know how you get on?

I’d go for a JTM 45 RI & late ‘70s or early ‘80s 2203/4. Not a huge JCM 800 fan.

Why two amps? Just use your volume knob for the clean sound.

The Silver Jubilee, while not as "classic" as a JTM, deserves some mention as it is the "Hair Metal" amp. I use the reissue, along with a Mesa Mark IV (and amp switcher) in my cover band.... 5 channels of VERY different tones.

Heck, I've seen guys lugging it into the honky-tonks on Broadway in Nashville for their cover band gigs.

Jesus the amplifier advice on this forum is embarrassing! Run for the hills!
Hey ADP, we don't mind opinions, but if your ultimate opinion is that you really don't like the LPF and its members and their comments - then why are you here?

Here was one of your other posts: "Whatever the post - this forum has turned into whatever Facebook must be. I'm not on it. I'll take it as a sign to leave this place behind and stick to the enjoyment of talking to real people in real life."

I wonder what the complaint was Mike?

I have a hard time believing you can do these for under 1K each.

There was one on Reverb this morning that's now gone...are you the culprit???

More specifically on the pedals I mentioned - Stu Castledine, The Wizard (essentially a Laney Supergroup with a Rangemaster stuck in the front) is early Sabbath all day. Stu's take on a 73 Rams Head is called the V2 - rarely do I turn it off, down maybe, but never off. And finally the Origin Effects Revival Drive, which is about 25 amps all in one box, when I figure out how to use the bugger that is. I reckon I'm qualified to fly Jumbo's at the point I'm at in the instruction manual...half way that is. Oh and I've got an Audio Kitchen Big Trees - an amp and a drive pedal all in one.

Hope you snagged the Cornell, cracking amp.

Here's me playing Greeny through one, my one and only claim to infamy ( plus I haven't posted the picture for at least three days!! )

No it wasn't me :p

What is the difference between the 15/20 and 45/50 exactly? Just more power in the latter? seems either one can provide a decent middle ground between early JTMs and latter high gain models. Which makes sense as the plexi is termed the 'middle brother'. Still can't help but feel I'd be better served by going for two separate amps that cover the two extremes though? Tbh I've been overwhelmed by all the options - its absolutely taken over my headspace over the last few days just researching all the different options! 2202..2204...plexi bass, plexi Superlead, jtm45/50 ... JPM20, JPM Shitkicker deluxe etc. You know what I'd do if I had money to burn is buy the whole lot.

By the way I probably should have stated that I'm recording direct through a load box and torpedo cab as I just don't have the space for proper speaker cabinets ;)

regarding pedals I'm pretty much covered in that area - I have a Kingsley harlot I'm really happy with, plus a large range of big muffs from Stomp Under Foot, a Sidecar TS variant by Hudson and a fuzzface.

Most marshalls do nice dirty sound. JTM 45 is the best clean as it has a tube rectifyer. Great amp for clean and edge "a little hair" type tones. 2204 (JMP or JCM800 with vert inputs) is best all around.

One's loud, the other one's feckin loud.

There's an 18/20 head for sale in Blighty for £850, I'll pm the link if it's one you haven't seen.

The Cornell's have switching between Valve & Silicon rectification, best of both worlds, to add to Wilko's observations earlier.

Just to pile on the Silver 2554 camp check this out. I have owned the JTM45 and about every combo fender from the 1960's- the Silver has it covered. It gets surprisingly clean. And with a little boost into the front end you can go straight to hell (I mean not cookie-monster-singer stuff but hair metal).
