• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

I take it you know his From The Cradle album and the tunes he's done relatively recently with Winton Marsalis?

I'll have to check out the wynton marcelis stuff, but I must admit I got a little tired of the 'new' stuff Eric has been putting out- of course repeated listens open things up, but I only tried 'old sock' once.
I keep going back to the 'edge of darkness' ep because it never ceases to amaze me how much feel and emotion he gets in the first 3 odd minute track, and I like the sparse experimental feel of it all-just a showcase for modern (in 85 I admit) blues.
I'm going to check out the live version on the 24 nights album, I'll get back to you.
Cheers guys

Ok, had a bit of a Clapton day,
Thanks for the ' from the cradle rehearsal ' link, I enjoyed that.
Motherless child is the standout for me, and don't get me wrong, as a blues purist-Eric is peerless, he IS the blues for me , as a White middle aged westerner.
I also watched the live version of Edge of darkness, it nearly captures the vibe of the original version-even surpasses it sometimes with the full orchestral recreation of the record.
But I had to compare it to the original, and I guess a lot of credit is deserved by michael kamen, this was 85, and I think there's a bit of editing going on, I'll stick by my original claim, the 3 minute 14 second title track is an education in blues phrasing and emotion that I don't think I've heard anywhere else.
Just watching the documentary about Clapton-the 60s review, and Hendrix popped up, easy to see why he changed everything really.
Some people just have it,
Some people will never find it,I'll keep trying
Cheers guys

I seem to remember Pete Townsend saying that the Edge of Darkness stuff was some of the best he'd ever heard from Clappo.

Hear hear to the original poster! I had a bit of an obsession with this cut at the start of the year and I loved the original series which this piece was obviously scored for. To my ears he's using blackie in the middle position with a bit of Boss chorus/delay. The live version showcases his exquisite bending and vibrato- total control.I love the original though, some of the phrases are so emotive they bring tears, perfectly matching the melancholy of the series! I absolutely loved his soloing on the Tommy soundtrack too- eyesight to the blind, an earlier era Blackie if I'm not mistaken!
