As an add-on to Charlie's 'bursts for sale' thread, I thought I would start a humbucker goldtop thread.

These are all 1957.

No bargains there, and the numbers seem very ambitious given the nature of the instruments.

OMMV

Will a 57/58 Gold Top bring $200K? I knew they had been at $100k, but thats quite a jump...

I believe he means "their condition".

Ok. Thanks.

I've been following the GT's for a while now and the prices of those that stay on the market are somewhere in the 100K-200K range.

A part from the Guitar Exchange one, there are none in mint condition. Which to me is no problem, but indeed, the prices often don't reflect the condition.

The Woodstock one is original but has a white bobbin, so I guess it isn't as original as advertised. I checked that one because it was nearby. I think it's priced out of the market. Maybe no intention of getting a sale.

....there are none in mint condition.

It's nowhere as clean as it initially appears. There are very deep cracks in the finish on top.

I bought a cleaner one last year for very significantly less.

A question for those who know these guitars better than me - all other things being equal (condition etc), is there a premium attached to gold tops having cream plastic over black?

Yes, despite the best efforts of the owners of the black parts ones to claim otherwise.:hee

The back on this one looks quite reddish on the picutres (see below). Was the back colour on '58 goldtops less brown and more like on bursts?

Yeah, but look at the top. Looks like he used ANSCO film in a Kodak camera...(boy, there's a reference for the old-timers...)

I'm not naming anyone but I never saw so many 57/58 GTs with black guards and salad before the last ten years or so. I can't believe that's because people were hiding them? The cream surrounds values have something to do with the "lions share" of these black guard GTs, IMHO.

All the ones I have seen [that seemed original] had low serial numbers.
Seems like 7-3XXX and higher are cream. :hmm

ATB Guitars in the UK has a beautiful 58 GT for sale. Don’t know the price though.
