• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Damn....Why can't I play like........

What's yours?
(try to keep it under 5)

And why is it some people with 'x' years of practice just have all the melody and chops and skill, while other people with the same 'x' years just can't quite get there. It's like the magic bullet just hits some people. C'mere magic bullet and hit me.

Btw, in case you didn't know, Berton Averre (the Knack) choice of guitar is a 59 historic, though I'm not sure if it's an historic he's using here.

This is an odd one for me, because while I have always loved the way certain folks played, I always knew that I could NEVER play like them...the magic had to come from me. To a certain extent I've gotten where I wanted to be...but always knew it would take much more intense practicing and many hours of dedication....more than I was willing to give if I was going to really make money in this business...but I've always felt that I had the ability at least for a certain kind of rock / blues...if not the drive.

I truly have never wanted to play just like someone else. That's their magic. Mine has to come from me.

Now there are guys whose ability is far beyond what I could ever be and I love their playing:

Those guys are first and foremost

Peter Green
Billy Gibbons
Duane Allman
B.B. King
Dickey Betts

Two part answer.

First - I'd like to have the guitar playing skills of Joe Bonamassa, Paul Gilbert and Joe Pass.

Second - I'd like to have the guitar riff-writing skills of Jimmy Page, Billy Gibbons, and Angus/Malcolm Young.

But that won't happen. I try to play smoothly and I hope for the day when I can get through the solo for Stairway to Heaven without flubbing the fast parts.

Back to practicing...

I'm also pretty happy with how I play...but...I'd love to...

...get close to the technical ability of Andy Timmons...
...attain the phrasing prowess and sensitivity of Jeff Beck...

...but...

I'd happily settle for getting closer and closer to my own voice on the guitar.

Tonally, I like almost EVERYTHING that EVERYONE, here at The Forum digs! :yah

Note-wise/rythymically, birds, frying bacon and engines that run like shit are some of many inspirations, fer me! :jim

I saw Doug Aldrich last Saturday with Whitesnake. He blew me away. Favored a goldtop most of the evening.

Yup! He is THE reigning champ of the heavy metal Les Paul. Notice how the tone of the Gold Top blew away any other guitar he picked up including the white custom and the sunburst. It was twice as huge sounding.:dude:

Coverdale introduced him as the Lord of the Les Paul. I thought Whitesnake was gonna be all laddy da is this love that I'm feeling...but no...they were very heavy. The transitions between numbers were outstanding. And the second guitar player was no slouch.

Tesla opened. Good night for dueling Les Pauls.
