• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Did Marshall ever produce a Bad Amplifier?

I had a Marshall JCM 800 (50w head and 4*12cab) with two channels - one for crunch and one with more gain. I didn´t like at all - the tone was fat but "dull", no personality. In the hunt for the perfect tone I also had a JTM 45 RI - but that wasn´t my cup of tea. Not much gain even when cranked. But I tried a 2061 which with the volume above 6 had the sound you always been looking for!!!! Sounds like an old plexi but at lower volume.

MG seriers. Unfortunatly it is my only amp right now :wha because i am going from the process of shitty stuff to good stuff :dude . Im done with the guitar side ( American Tele and R9) and now i just need the amp. I dont like the MG's at all. The clean is decent, but the distortion is terrible. The basses are muddy and the trebles are harsh. Soon im going to get a JCM of some sorts.

JTM 30 and the JTM 60 combo's - tubes, yes - suck ass crappy tone, oh yeah - pure junk

I highly disagree with this statement. Yes they were prone to xformer problems. ButI bought mine(jtm30x12) brand new in 95 or 96 and had it immediatley converted to EL34s. It sounds killer never failed. The clean channel ROARS when loud and the distorion channelif tweaked properly is usable. BUT due to the stigma around this amp I cant seem to move it. Not because it doesnt sound good, just need cash. And no i am not advertising it here , it is in the classifieds

I find it funny that people buy other boutique amps looking for that quintessential Marshall tone when DSLs and even old Marshalls are to be had everywhere.

I have a couple of Budda amps...one head and one combo. The head is a ptp model and while it sounds very good it doesnt sound like my old Marshalls, its got fantastic tone but not THAT tone.

I know when i first started playing guitar and did not know a whole lot about amps, i refused to buy a used amps b/c i did not understand how they worked, could not tell if they were modded, afraid of it blowing up on me a week after i bought it, etc.

Buying new for electronics is often a more reliable commitment so maybe that is why people like it. Also, modern boutique amps say that they to the Marshall X and Y but they can also add Z to it without cheaning the tone. Wether that Z is another channel, an effects loop, a different voicing, etc.

just a thought.

MG series... next, valvestates (althoug for home use I liked the avt50)... I don´t dislike the tone of the JTM600, I think is very usable... don´t consider the JTM30 very marshall sounding....

That's interesting with the response to the JCM 900's. I read somewhere that the Rev. Billy G. rode a whole back line of them on the Recycler Tour.

I still want a JCM 900. I played them in studios all the time and I think the sound is much warmer than the 2000.

I completely agree about the Valvestate. Sounds good at home but when I take it to a gig? Bleah.
