• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Does anyone here own/ordered the new Royal (Page Hiwatt)?

I just put a deposit down on a new Royal JPP-100w and I’m very much looking forward to plugging in when it arrives. It’s being built by the same guy who built the Page Hiwatt that was posted on here some months back. The thing is…I’m just curious if anyone else has either ordered one, or actually owns one. If so, I’d be extremely curious as to your thoughts or opinion on how it sounds…what speakers/cab you might be using…how you like it…etc…

Thanks in advance!

Here’s a link if anyone’s interested: www.royalamps.com

Did you read the part about amps with NOS components are for display purposes only? :wow

The pricing seems very reasonable.

Agreed. I believe the pricing is very reasonable as well....especially for such a high quality build.

I would think the best combination would be the Page head plugged into a marshall or marshall style 4X12 speaker cab, as this is what Page did when he used his. I wish I had the money to afford one, although I would have to get the 50w version cause 100w would be to loud for my purposes, I mean I'm not playing festivals and stadiums.

Hi Mark - sorry I owe you an email....in the meantime -congrats on your purchase of a Royal JPP 100. I had purchased JPP 005 from Eric and had him load NOS components in it...The Amp is a very high powered Amp - not for the squeemish...:hee

I continue to play with the settings on this Amp to explore different flavors of tone that this Amp can produce. Eric originally gave me some advice with the settings, so I use that advice as the standard, which is setting the Master Volume to maximum, using the Input Volume to control volume, Bass on about 2, Middle and Treble set to about 4-5, Presence set to 7-8. However with my limited equipment setup to support this Amp, specifically the Cabinets, I feel I could be getting more tone from this Amp with a better set of Cabinets.

A few notes - search high and low for the Mullard Blackburn EL34 and ECC81/ECC83 tubes. That process took some time, but those tubes are in my JPP 005 and the hi-fi sound that this Amp projects is amazing....crystal clear and every note seems to ring out. This Amp is very loud...:wow :bug...and of course it should be. The cabinet (Marshall MF400W 4x12) I am using for this Amp is not a great choice for maximum sound, so I am on the hunt for a couple of good cabinets.

I also puchased a ThroBak StoneBender pedal, which is a nice match with this Amp. It gives me the extra growl on top of the great clear sound. The Doubleneck sounds especially sweet through this Amp!!:dude:

Good Luck with your Royal 100 and happy playing...!!

My God Frank..... that's some family of flame you got there!!!!!!...... Yeah I cant wait to get my Royal 50W and compare it to my 100W version...... I should have it in less than a month..... Same pre-amp section, just lower wattage...... it'll be interesting to see if I can get those early live Page tones at a bit lower volume.....

How do these amps differ from the ordinary DR103's? I have a 74, I run with my SG classic. All Mullards and your right .They do sound fantastic.

I believe the circuit was made to be more like a Marshall. The pre amp schematic is on MHuss.com too so you can take a look at that and check it with the regular DR 103 schematic. Also it had the XLR input for a footswitch, which can either cut volume, or if you have two of them daisy chained, the other amp gets used as a slave when the footswitch is engaged and you get a lot more gain.

I dont build them so I couldnt tell you the actuall technical differences other than to say that Jimmy Page's amp had a different preamp section than a standard DR103... the power section is essentially the same except for the addition of a choke.... tonally, they saturate more than a DR103. From what I understand DR103s stay relatively clean at loud volumes. The Royal amp which is a copy of Page's breaks up more like a typical plexi but still has some of that Hiwatt tone...... kind of a blending of the two.... these soundfiles were done with the amp turned up to about 8 with no pedals.... http://www.royalamps.com/enter/soundclips.htm

Ed...the sound clips really do sound phenomenal! The other thing I really like are the two videos that are posted on the Royal site...whereas, you get to hear a guy (you) actually describe the amp and then see/hear a guy with great chops playing through one in a live band situation. If you ask me, it's a very well thought out website.

That's Eric (the builder of these wonderful amps) playing in the live band situation.

Yes, I'm aware of that and I absolutely love his playing style! He sounds more like Jimmy Page, then Page does himself! But of course Eric has his own thing going on in there as well. But it's like having the best of both worlds. :2cool

Yeah, I think that's great that Eric can get the page tone very well. It's the closest I've heard to the real thing.

Stunning sound files... and Eric's original song is killer too. The amps and build quality looks incredible too.

Small point (feel free to ignore): Showing the Marshall heads in the video(s) might confuse some folks though.

Best of luck in the new adventure.

Well I don't think Eric is going to move all his Marshall heads off the top of the cabs, I mean that's a lot of amp heads to move just for that purpose, he has as many Marshall's as Page had hooked up or more. I love the whole look of his setup, I mean it's everyone who want's to play an LP through a Marshall's dream, to play through so many at once.
