Double-White Humbuckers! (After-Market, don't get excited...)

Anyone know who makes great sounding & vintage-looking double-whites? (Or Zebras?)

I'm wondering if there are SD antiquities in this color, or else a comparable model.

BTW, another question; is there any system to identify the brand and model of humbuckers (not original) that came on my Les Paul?

You could try SD's SH-1 model. It supposedly sounds and is built like a '59 PAF, and comes in zebra or double-white. Haven't tried them personally, so I don't know if they sound PAF-like or not.

Thanks, Gary.

I guess those are WHITE white pickups, not creme, right?

So to get Creme piclups... Dimarzio Virtual Vintage? I don't know how I feel about buying from these guys...

Des,

I could be wrong about this, but my understanding was that all SD Antiquities were either zebras or double whites under the covers.

i think that most antiquities are zebra under the covers, although sometimes you do get lucky with a double-white every now and then. i think that SD doesn't typically put double whites under antiquities these days because they don't want people removing the covers after all the aging they do.

since dimarzio has a patent on the double whites, SD can't officially make them, but you'll find them under the covers of antiquities, or more often seth lovers. i actually just got a set of double white seth lovers from a shop here in NYC. i had to wait a while for them, but they do look nice.

SD Antiquities

First of all, some of us got into the habit of using the term double cream to avoid confusion with white meaning real true white. White hums are a regularly available item from SD, but they are white white as it Str*t pickguard white ie. The Pearly Gates Plus is a special version made for Fender and when I've seen someone offering one of these on eBay out of a Str*t it's alway white.

As to SD Antiquities, they occur in all three of the possibilities, double black, zebra, and double cream. Currently I know of someone on the USA west coast that has some new unsold SD Antiqs, had him check the bobbins (remove bottom side small screws), and he has a few double cream necks.

Someone even suggested that the wind has turned around on this issue and SD is now again able to make double cream hums as long as they leave SD with a cover installed...

Covered SD's Double-Cream, hold the sugar...

It would be great if they were legal from SD under covers. What a great legal work-around (Larry DiMarzio, bite me!)

So you could just remove the covers if you wanted exposed cream coils... I like that.

when i mentioned double whites above, i am talking about double creams.

most of SD's pickups are available in black, or zebra officially. "unofficially," you can get double creams under a cover, which is what i did with the seth lovers i recently ordered. however, i was told that while you could possibly luck out and get a double cream antiquity, SD doesn't do it too often anymore because he doesn't want people removing the covers after all the aging work done to them.

My Antiquitys are double-blacks.

Seymour Duncan admired some "aged" tele black guards I had in Dave Rogers booth at the Dallas show in March.

After some discussion about how I was getting a real authentic looking black guard we got to talking about my Murphy 59R and my plan to put some Antiquitys in it.

Seymour said I should e-mail him after I got back home and he would do me up a a set himself. He implied (I thought) that he could get me double-whites if I wanted but they would be shipped with covers on...

I e-mailed his web-site when I got back and am still waiting on a reply.............. He seemed sincere in the offer so I don't know what happened.

I ended up getting a pair from Dave when I went up to LaCrosse to pick up my guitars after Dave guys got back from the show with my stuff. Jimbo put them in and they've been in ever since. I did switch out the Duncan aged covers for some real 50's/60's worn nickel covers later though.

I just bought a pair of double cream SD antiquitys. I got them from Black Rose Customs. I found their website on the internet. They have really good prices on them. The guy I talked to said they either come in zebra or double cream mostly, that is under the covers. Try them.

Yeah, I did say "Double White," Gary.

Still, thanks for the site. Bluesey, I'll check out that supplier.

If you want to skip all the clandestine manueverings, you could just go get Dimarzio PAFs or Virtual Vintage PAFs.

Personally, I think its underhanded the way Dimarzio has trademarked the double creme, but the PAF I have sounds fantastic, and I know RICH has a Virtual Vintage that he digs.

Good Phrase, Turk.
>> Are PAF Pro 151's in any way similar to the PAF, 'cause I have one of those I haven't yet tried in my 'Paul.

Bluesey / Des Howl / and any others...

I also found out about blackrosecustom not too long ago, he looks to be caring the full SD line including Antiquity Hums. At the time it seemed he was not tuned in on the whole bobbin issue but I gave him the scoop, and also the tip about pulling two of the small screws from the bottom to peek at the bobbin color.

I didn't know he also had a website but he left a link in a thread on the SD board, looks like he is at...
http://www.blackrosecustom.emerchantpro.com/

Looks like he is going to try to stock zebras of the many of the models. Maybe give him a look :)
