• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

I'm sure you are all familiar with the story where the Allman Bros. played Duane's bursts at their last show at the Beacon, back in 2014. In re-reading this old article, I'm a bit perplexed as to why Galadrielle refers to these guitars as "fragile." I get valuable but aren't these the venerable, late 50's LP workhorses that seem to travel just fine in some circles around here? Obviously, JB comes to mind. Was it just a word she used to describe something else in her mind? Was it something about that they HADN'T been played in so long???

Galadrielle says, “It’s a daunting thing to try to imagine these fragile and valuable things out in the world, and it had to be the right time and place.”

The article just in case: http://www.guitarworld.com/magazine...s-pauls-are-reunited-onstage-allman-brothers’

I think she means they're fragile in a sentimental way. I know she has deep emotional connections to the two bursts since they were handed down to her when she was very young and they're some of the only things she owns of her father's.

I feel that Gibson Les Pauls [old or new] are fragile.
YMMV :salude

Just look at how many repaired LP headstocks are out there. Especially compared to old strats. I think fragile is a pretty good term.

I suppose I get that on some level. But Mr. Townsend may beg to differ!

I saw Duane's '58 Burst at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame about 10 years ago and I was surprised by it's condition, it looked pretty rough, hardware was almost rusted with tarnish, the finish very dull, overall it appeared to me that it was simply taken out of case that it had been sitting in a damp basement for 20 years. Not at all well kept to my eyes. Maybe that was the point, to keep it in the original condition it was last left. It actually did look "fragile" to me in all seriousness.

She probably saw them being handled with extreme care... they are quite valuable and dropping one on the floor and having the headstock pop off is not ideal.... Considering the value their fragility is a bigger issue that it would be with an off the shelf LP.

Same when I saw it and the DarkBurst three years ago. I don't know what kind of policies/procedures the RnR HOF has for instruments that are on loan. Probably spelled out the contracts with the owners.
Here are two fun photos:
