• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Hi all,
I just won an auction on the 'bay for a Dunlop Octavio, the one in the Jimi Hendrix Authentic series (you know, the one that looks like a piece of cheese...) I got it for what I believe is rather cheap ($83), so if I don't like it, I might be able to flip it rather easily.

I know nothing about those pedals (other than it works better with the neck pickup), and never used one, but since we covers a couple of Hendrix songs in our set, I though I might use it (Purple Haze amongst others). I'm sure I can get a use of it for some other covers too, and for some crazy jams :)

Has any of you tried one, own one, love it or hate it, and why?

It's going to be plugged into a Marshall 2555SL (Slash version of the Jubilee).
The amp is always running dirty, with moderate gain (around 7 on the dial), and the master is on 5. I get the clean from my guitars vol knobs.
I assume it works better in front of the amp? Worth trying in the loop though ?
Would you put it before or after the wah (true bypass) and before or after a Dunlop Rotovibe? I also use a small buffer (Klon type buffer) right after the guitar and before the tuner (TC electronics polytune).

In short, any advice and opinions are welcome. I should have it sometime next week, and I want to know the most of it before plugging it in...

Thanks all :dude:

It's pretty bad ass and you got it at a steal compared to how much they were when first introduced. I have heard them and they nail the Band of Gypsies sound. They also love the volume knob/pedal.

....and use it in the front of the amp like they were designed in the late 60's. Generally, wah pedals or and tone shaping effects should be in the front of your pedal board chain and any distortion after. Univibe/chorus/trem effects after that and delays/reverbs at the end. Of course, any of this is open for debate.

Thanks Pat for the reply.

Signal chain as of today is:

front:
Guitar > Buffer (Klon clone) > tuner (polytune) > wah (EB wah) > rotovibe (dunlop) > amp

FX loop:
Chorus (CH1) /Trem (TR2) /Delay (DD5 or 6?)/clean boost (MXR 401) are in the loop, and in that order.

I use a buffer because the tuner and rotovibe, along with the long cable runs, tend to eat up all the high end. Cables are all Mogami, but that doesn't prevent from the treble loss...

I understand that!

Tried the Octavio a band practice tonight, this thing is insane :)
Works well with the Strat, and also with the LP, but not so well when engaging a wah (true bypass, before the octavio). The wah is not very pronounced when the Octavio is on.

I was surprised at the low level of noise it makes.

Very cool also that with the fuzz maxed out, the octave up almost disapears, leaving you with almost fuzz only, and usable more often.

Very happy of my purchase, especially at that price...
