• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Fenders like 9s?

There are certain things that just don't work with .010s on a Telecaster. Certain types of pedal steel licks, 2-string bends á la Amos Garrett, some specific slippery soul licks, Burton etc. It's also a different sound.

I use 10's on the LP and 335, and use 11's on my '52 RI Tele. The Tele just sounds better with 11's, and it helps with getting the action right. As another poster mentioned, lighter strings on the Tele seem to make the high E too thin sounding. Need more beef, er, steel. 9's are just too light for my taste and seem to lose a bit of volume/tone. I am pretty sure most Fender and Gibsons are originally from the factory with 10's unless you order it differently. Not that it matters how it comes from the factory, but changing string gage often involves adjusting the neck, saddles, intonation, etc..

My Robin Trower Strat has 11's because that's what Trower uses ... trimmed

If you're enough of a Trower fan to have a Trower model Strat and know that he uses 11s ...

... then you probably also know that he tunes down a whole step to D-standard

Just filling in others who might not know that and might get an idea you're wranglin' a way-stiffer rig than ya are

Tuned down a whole step, 11s probably feel more like 9s ... or 10s at most (only guessing, someone with direct experience could chime in ... you, in fact ...)

No critique intended, just adding a couple factoids to augment the discussion

(augmented factoids - they're kinda like demolished ninths)

What color?
Maple or rose fingerboard?

I use Rotosound .08's because they don't make Rotosound .06's. Jimi Hendrix sounded the best.

Yeah good point. It seems quite common for people to overlook the tuning 1/2 step to 1 step down when Strat players and their heavy string gauges are brought up.

9’s on all my guitars. I just like how they feel to me. 95% of my playing is at “bedroom” volume so the tone things not a big deal.

I split the difference with 9.5 on both Fenders and Gibsons.

The vintage guitars still get 0.10’s…….. for now.
