• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Righto, took many years but I finally got the perfect pickup match for my 64 Firebird. Seymour Phat Cats. Now before you guys have a heart attack this guitar had been already routed for humbuckers when I got it, but I returned it to minis. However I could just never make it work sound wise (and I have another FB that does work), and so I decided to rout it back to hums. The guitar however, remained too bright. After some time I decided to try P90’s. BINGO!

It’s always been a great playing guitar, and now it sounds fantastic too.

What else you guys doing your Firebirds to make them “yours”?

Keep in mind this wasn’t an unmolested 64. I wanted humbuckers (full size) first, and thought they would give me what I wanted. I really dig the Phat Cats. I have plenty of old P90 guitars, so these being a little wider range without loosing the oomph is a cool, new tone for me. I’ll be gigging this one.

Yeah.. it's a visual thing with me. Full sized hb's in a firebird look weird to me.

Tell me more about the NR w/ buckers! Looks great.

2002 Custom Shop model. Full size humbuckers were stock (Burstbucker 2 and 3).

Mine came with a DiMarzio AT in the bridge and I had a set of Tom Holmes H450/455 waiting to go into something. So that is how she sits. The Holmes are bright and raunchy and aggressive, but are actually really sweet in the middle position with the volumes and tones rolled back a bit, so they get a pretty decent "Firebird" tone for full size humbuckers.

And the white NR (2010? Custom Shop) is just a beast with the P-90s.

Both have beautiful Custom Shop '64 style necks that border more on "big" than they do 60's slim.
