• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

I would ditch the Studio too, since I'm not a fan of studio LP's or White LP's, however, I do like White SG customs.

I just bought a new Ebony SG Standard today and I have a 2006 Les Paul Studio in Alpine White with Gold Hardware, so I say get rid of the Melody Maker.

I actually like the Les Paul Studios with the 490/498s..

I never liked the sound of my 2005 Standard with Burstbuckers.

Actually come to think of it? I might just do that!! I like the Studio i have for what it does w/o the frills and gimmicks of the rest of the Les Paul line. I got about a week or so. But the SG i have already, just gotta make a quick decision. The 2K5 Standard SG? were you referring to?

The 2005 Les Paul Standard had Burstbuckers.
I think all SG Standards since 2002 or 2003 came with the 490/498s.

I say nix the studio. The MM is more rare, and you said it's a player too. The studio is a dime a dozen and cheap version of a Les Paul. I know I'm going to hear $#!+ about that statement, but it is true...it is a cheaper version of a Les Paul. "Not that there is anything wrong with that."

So what is a Melody Maker then..? :peace2

I'd choose to keep the best guitar of the two.
If there is no best one, I'd keep the Studio - I love those in white and gold....as long as they don't have the small block inlays. More versatile and better looking than a MM.

Nice one Transam! Which one went in the end?

How are you liking the SG??

Thanks woody-89!!!...I love 'er to bits btw?.....She played and sounded remarkable over the '61RI/Angus Young i compared againts with. Price and Spec accuracy were not the issue but a player in its own right.

Im still quite torn between the two. I like to keep the MM, but the Studio was calling me again for its a simple beast over the others.:rolleyes

Peace!:hank

Ive found that there's been a lot of difference in the quality of new SGs, moreso than Les Pauls IMO.

Glad you've found a good'n!

I agree, it is inconsistent in a sense that certain models are not up to par where it should be. I remember the days when u can pickup a Gibson right from the box/rack and it plays well right from the get go. Now you gonna try a bunch of em. There is quite a bit to factor.

Hey, there you go, TA. Congrats! :salude

How did the tone of each one you tried sound unplugged? Which neck felt better?

I know pickup height can make a huge difference in amped tone. I also know the action can often be dramatically improved with proper truss rod tension and bridge height.

Rock on! :headbange

Thanks fo the Kudos bro!!, as you can see i ended up with the SG Standard. I am stumped on the weight but to no suprised she is more than a bark and bite. I was kinda disappointed that the Angus Young and the 2K8 '61RI didn't fair well in the playability and resonance unplug (what more plugged?). The set up was superb right off the rack. The neck was nice & straight but with hair tad of relief, not small a'la 60s neck (which i LOVE btw!), but more on the '59 profile a bit wide/flat and chunky at the same time proportioned all across the board. Great for chording, riffage and specially lead work right up the horns. What i love the most was the resonant and sustain clean or dirty. You think the 6.1 lbs weight had anything to do with this? I used 3 different kinda scale and its 6.1 lbs allright.
This is a keeper, glad i found her.:peace2 Woulda/Coulda opted for the '61RI instead but the 2 piece i thought did not warrant the price of another 6 bills. Yes it is spec'd correctly almost...........I'd rather hunt down a used VOS. I've yet to find a real playing '61. Hopes its not the end.:bike

Congrats, its beautiful! But doesn't that SG Standard have the thicker "round" neck profile that I enjoy so much!? I thought you were a skinny neck sort of guy?

Pretty soon you'll be on the lookout for a chunky neck R8.

Thanks Brother !!.... Yup the Alpine White went today as a trade in. I'll miss her, but i have the SG to keep my mind away from her. Besides?:wow i allready have anothe Les Paul so it wont be so bad. I dont i'll miss her that much. About the neck?...Yes that neck shape and size is just right up my alley. Similar to the Studio which is a rounded '59 shape. I do prefer the '60s neck although i have a '56 RI Goldtop which i love also. Actually? i dont have a problem with either. I just started with the Slim Taper neck when i bought my first Les Paul which is a Classic and a Deluxe. Looks like even with the neck i've covered from 50's to '59s and 60's too?:applaude
It sure is nice to have a variety of neck shape and sizes at reach depending on the type of sound/tune your playin these days. Never an issue btw!.

Tried another '61RI today? and by far? As much as i hate to say it?:wow The one that went home with me is the total MOJO Risin keeper. I've found a very exceptional playin SG. The lesson again i learned today is that no matter what is out there wether it be a VOS/RI/Custom? It's always worth to try something below the more coveted a must model. It's all preferrence from price/historic accuracy/availability besides the tone/sound/feel and MOJO!!:peace2

Gotta post some more beauty shots of her soon. A Sampler for Fun at a Jam with a couple of SG Standards??:wow
http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?songid=7186211&q=hi ....of course how can we forget the out of tune emulation playin'?:wow

Cheers!!:salude

p.s. Did the neck shape of the SG Standard changed at all since the mid 90's like i've heard and read? I've always read and read about the the '61RI but not so much about the Standard.
