When you're in the studio there's almost always a compressor somewhere between you and the recording. But when it comes to whats on the floor, I've seen some players with compressors in their chain but at settings that just don't make sense or help their sound at all. Most times, it's because they just don't understand compressors. Some say I don't use one because it messes up my sound. Well, maybe that's because it's not set right.

Of course, this falls under the no rules heading, but when I've seen players boards in the studio and I just scratch my head and ask "How can this guy get a good sound when it's set like that?" One player said to me "Oh I don't use that but I got it because I've heard it was good". I'm like ok. :sneaky:

So falling into the rabbit hole, I got an UA 1176 pedal. I set it like I set my rack unit. 4:1, fast attack, slow release, and Bam!, there it is. What a great sound.

This UA 1176 has that secret weapon dual setting. Watch out! there is the Black Dog sound. Woah!

Anybody else squeeze their signal on the floor?

Yup.

1176 is THE sound.

Sounds great on EVERYTHING. Guitar, Bass, Keyboards and even drums.

The Slide rig is 2 of them chained.

WOW.

I use them ALL of the time I am plugged in. (Usually only one at a time).

When I find different versions I buy them.

I love all of them.

My preferred ratio on everything is 3:1 fast attack and slow release too (depending on what’s being used) which allows the signal to breath.. but as you pointed out.. it’s down to preference and the frequency/signal you’re getting and desired effect.

I use a Xotic SP Compressor, "always on". The Blend knob is key. I wouldn't use a comp that doesn't have a mix/blend control.

Where are you placing it? I have a 1176 rack that I use occasionally for tracking, but I don't place it between my guitar and amp. I have a Boss compressor (the three knob) and a Maxon that I use now and again to even things out live.

The 1176 style looks cool, I'm just not sure how it would sound between a guitar and amp.

I've put it before everything, between guitar and effects, and I've put it where a rack 1176 would be, between amp and daw.

I found that before everything, the input and output are very sensitive and will "boost" the signal into the pedal chain so downstream effects need to be adjusted or I just play with the input and output on the 1176. I've seen other engineers do it like that and have the actual rack unit sitting in the live room. Then the signal only hits an LA2A and eq before the DAW. Really punchy sound.

But I've also put it after everything. Reamp.

I've also got curious and put it after the bass and it sounded good.

So I think this little buggerwill be getting a lot of use.

Personally, unless it is strictly for slide or chicken picken clean tones I don't like compression at or near the beginning of my guitar signal. Even then I would 10/10 times take a tube amp, especially one with a tube rectified power section, cranked up to its sweet spot.

I guarantee you a lot of the guitar heroes known for those tones did the same unless you are talking of recordings after 1972 when stomp box compressors became a thing.
