Generation 1 Protector case with Historic and Vintage SG? Additional Neck Support?

Hi guys,

I have a Gen 1 Protector case (with 3 plastic latches) and was wondering, with the neck angle that these cases were designed for, should I put a cotton rag under the neck of my 2007 R8? I'm also looking to buy a vintage 1961 - 63 SG (junior) that would use this case.

If any of these guitars would need additional neck support, I would guess that a rag placed on the neck area by the headstock is the best place to be? Is this correct? The purpose would be to raise the headstock so that it doesn't touch the bottom of the case?

Thanks a lot!

Gen 1 case.jpg

I've circled my proposed location for any needed additional support. Is this the best place?

Yes, I have found that my '58/'59 Junior headstock touches the back of the case, so I lay the strap across the support area you've circled and lay the neck on the doubled over strap.

I use this case to store/transport my ‘58 LP Junior.
I use a small towel between the neck support and the guitar neck to raise the headstock off the back of the case.

I put a towel on the support nearer to the body. The headstock is close the outside, but whenever I check, I don't see how it would touch.

I just have to say that I have the same case for my childhood first electric My beloved Les Paul Custom and this Generation 1 case is a super great case as I have shipped this guitar and case cross country from NY to LA and back and so many times to NY and back and never ever have I had a single issue until recently when I got the lecture from someone close to me that takes care of my instruments and told me that it will protect the guitar under normal conditions unless it falls off the back of a truck and gets run over and then the guitar gets squished and all that stuff . So now I will be soon getting a proper road case because my guitars travel and are always fully insured . I have used this Generation 1 protector case since the mid to late 70's and is still in really good condition .

I can't speak enough about how highly I regard my Generation 1 (I guess that's what it is called now!) Protector case. There was a time in the early 80's that I was in a band that toured via flying, and being young & dumb at the time, I trusted my beloved '69 Custom in this type of case to the airlines. Once, on a quick layover, I looked out my window and saw the guitar literally being tossed into the baggage cart and about had a heart attack. I was nervous on the flight all the way home, but when I opened it up the guitar was good as ever!! Whew.

I got the guitar from Norman's and rightly chose the protector case over the original because I was only interested in protecting the guitar, and figured the newly issued Protectors were the way to go. In retrospect I was right!!
