• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Most of my life I have considered the sound of an overdriven Marshall the Holy Grail of tone. Lately I find my self listening and playing Fender. Old Ted Nugent, ZZTop, Setzer, etc.
Am I geting old or wiser ?

aroman - I've had the same '77 50w Marshall MV and 4x12 with G12 30M's since... well '77. I love that amp and probably will never part with it. Having said that your ears change with the years - like your tastebuds- I didn't like red wine was I was 12 - now ....love the stuff :davepaf
I'm finding myself wanting something smaller & tonally different just for a change as well.
go with it ...let your ears lead you:dude

Nah, I go back and forth even few years and I am a really old f**k. Lately I've been leaning towards the Marshall thang in a big way. I'm jonesing for an old 50w plex.. I say get 'em all!!

We're not getting older, we're getting.... Uhhh I forget... ;)

Hey daze, an Australian drinking red wine?, Ain't that illegal down there?? ;)

(Nah, I see all the Australian labels out here in California, and they're definately holding there own against the local labels!!)

aroman, I am getting old, too. I love fenders but my favorite tone would probably be my 66 JTM45 with KT66s. The old Vox AC30TB has to be right in there, too. I am gigging with the 18 watt Marshall tonight and tomorrow night with the AC30. I love that English sound. I can't do without my Fenders either. A Super Reverb with my LP on the neck pickup is about as good of a blues sound as you can get..........;)

Actually NOCD, beer consumption in Australia has been declining believe it or not. Still - can't go past a frosty 1 or 2.... at the end of a hot, humid summers day. :davepaf

Wiser, I have found that the "Marshall" overdrive is only one of many that I enjoy. I actually prefer the sound of my Hot Rod Deville over the JCM600 I used. I picked up an old Ampeg G12R (1963?) - I like the sound of that better than the Fender or the Marshall. Go figure

Roy, I too recently purchased a '67 Gemini I and put a Celestion Blue in it and this is classic tone heaven for me. The Celestion didn't rob it of it's Ampeg sound, and it had the original Ampeg 7591's and the guts are all original. These old amps just have a good warm tube tone that I've always loved. My tastes are eclectic also, I enjoy em all for what they do....and old Ampeg's do what they do best! Great Reverb on them too! :dew

I liked red wine at 12...probably why I'm not as good as I should be at actually PLAYING guitar now.

I say buy all the different sounding amps you can if you got the bread. I primarily employ a modern high gain aggressive style for my music but I love to play along with old blues records or the Allmans through a little old Fender or something. Sometimes I plug into a friend's rig that has a rackmount effects unit so I can get all kinds of wacky sounds that I would normally never use...it's fun. Sometimes I compose a riff on that stuff that I think will sound cool on my main stuff that I wouldn't normally have come up with because of the DIFFERENT sound. Different sounds can make you approach the instrument differently. I think it's good for you as a creative player to be able to plug into different (but still good sounding) stuff when you have the desire. You come back to your regular rig with a little different outlook in terms of what you play, at least IMHO. If you are not interested in more than one style of sound at all, this probably does not apply to you. It would probably make you just long for you favorite setup. Some people wanna hear one thing, all the time. It doesn't sound like you do...me neither. I get stale if I don't expiriment.

All work and no play make Humbuck a dull boy.

The guy who sold me my 66 jtm45 recently says he expects to get an old 50 watt plexi in soon. You won't save any money up front with him but, over time, it seems to be a good deal as his stuff is infallible vintage spec and comes perfectly setup with the best NOS tubes (according to some of us).

Send me an e-mail if you need any info. Andy_Siegler@attglobal.net
