• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Re: Gibbo Factory Pix

Interesting photos, Karl. Surprising amount of color variation in the mahogany blanks. (I'm sure some are korina, etc.)

Did you guys get to handle a number of raw blanks, compare them for weight & tap on them for resonance? If so, did you find a huge difference between various pieces of wood?

I always felt it would be a dream to hand-select wood for a personal Les Paul or Strat.

There might have been a Korina sample there. Mike would remember better as I was busy focussing etc. There was a picture (don't know if I put it up) where they pointed out a pallet of Korina way on top. We did get to feel he weight of the different wood. They label the weight on the side of the wood and in one of the pix where the blocks are stacke dyou can see the differentiation of the weights. When they are like that raw they seemed to be around 10 pounds and varied a lot.

Des, yes, they did show us a piece of Korina along with the other mahogany blanks. It was also amazing to feel the different weights of the mahogany. There was a guy in the corner who was classifying the flame maple tops for suitability of use for R9s versus R8s versus Goldtops, etc. Very interesting stuff.

I have added 153 pictures from the Regular Gibson Production Factory that you have not seen. Check out the automated conveyer hooks that transport the unfinished guitars overhead along the ceiling throughout their journey. I thought this was amazing. :

Here is also a shot of the end of the day production number chart. Average 320 guitars perday come out of the factory.
