• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Gibson quality a step up or did I just get lucky

Yet you kept them?
Yes. The goldtop is an excellent guitar. If I had bought the R8 online I would have sent it back. I only noticed the ding after 3 weeks of ownership and the tall fret is "to be expected" according to most techs.

No offence but if there were problems you should have returned the guitars back to the store you bought them from. Any reputable shop will state their return policy. Apparently you dissatisfaction wasn't enough to do that. Plus, a you didn't notice a ding until 3 weeks later?

My R7 has some fingerboard tool marks and the frets weren't polished. My new R8 has a small ding on the top near the neck that I didn't notice in the store and the 21st fret is high so needs levelling. Not great for Custom Shop guitars IMO.
That doesn't sound good. My standard 50's frets were perfect as checked by my tech. I didn't notice any dings on it but dings can happen on the floor at the music store so not really a Gibson issue I guess, unless it came right out of the box that way.

I would have if they were other wise fantastic guitars. I bought a road worn brad paisley tele (MIM) that I had to have the frets leveled and taken care of some high frets. Had to replace the nut as it wasn't cut very well. So a setup cost me a fair bit of money. Being made in mexico I accepted that but now that MIM tele plays as good as my custom shop 52.

I had Covid for 2 weeks so didn't touch the guitar and as I'm not one of those people who go over everything with a fine toothed comb I just didn't spot the ding. Now of course I can't unsee it.
