• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

I have seen True Historic Les Paul models form 2015, 2016, and 2017; just curious, did Gibson make changes/improvements on these as time went on? In other words, is a 2016TH any different from a 2017 TH?

True Historics were only made in 2015. Most of the Historic line retained the True Historic plastics and parts from 2016+ but did not have two things that the 2015s did: the TH top carve and the wet sanding of the finish. The TH medallion and TH COA were specific to just the 2015s.

Every issue of Historic will have subtle/more changes added etc. Just depend which year you are interested with.
Purist will be more hesitant and wait whatever besides the real deal. It is where you fall into getting a Paul really and where/what you opted for and want in the end.
This is the survival of the fittest with Gibson. Get the best what you can afford and play. Not everyone can afford the real deal, but there is options to get you to the closest. Others will not give a dump squat as they just want to play a nice model that is nice to look at besides play and sound.

They seem to hit their stride in 2017/2018. I am really enjoying the unpotted pickups that started in 2019. I played a vintage 59 back to back to my 1960 60th Anniversary and the sounds was amazingly close.

True Historics were made in 2015 and 2016 with a few spilling over into 2017 serials (but made in 2016 I think). Then there were the regular R9s from 2017 on that were similar plastics and but with Carmalita neck carve. One of the best aspects of them was the thin wet sanded finish. 2017 and on went back to the typical finish methods.

The first batch early 2015 had amazing tops and totally straight vertical grain on the backs. Later 2015 and into 2016 the woods tened to be more like the average R9. That is to generalize quite a bit but speaking from owning over a dozen of them and still have 8 in my possession.
