Just picked up a set of Gil's rings, very nice, but not sure if I'm going to use these or not. Any takers?

The color is a little darker than the current plastic I have, anyone have any tips for lightening them?

I think impossible, if you age them they get even darker.
Gils rings are a good match for historic plastic, a little less barbie and not to light.

They color looks perfectly like the darker original burst rings and the material is right.. a big plus.

If you want lighter rings you have to buy OTP/vintagehaven stuff.
The darker OTPs are close to Gils..the bone ones are imho lighter than a burst.
The fairy tale of very light rings is based on pictures.

In the end, there is no wrong or right. A matching pickguard is the target.
I like both..if you find a match for all the plastic its starts to look good.

Not necessarily, a LOT of Bursts show a mismatch between PU rings and the pickguard, so the perfect match isn't set in stone.

The colour of the rings varied alot over the years and with most of them now now having 50+ years of age on them, well it's even more so. Gil's are really nice and the colours are pretty much correct compared to originals, but so are Stephen Poole @ Vintage Haven. I think that between OTP and Gil you have all the bases covered as to "right" colours of rings.

Not the same color, but a matching look and range.
Even if its mismatching. :peace2

There are awful combinations.:bug
(greenish guards and pinkish rings - a no go...)

Lighter looking rings are harder to match with Gils rings, than with bone OTPs.

IMHO you have to look at binding, poker chip and pick guard.

What TM1 said is right.

No, don't think we can. I just put them on my 57 Historic makeover anyway, so no worries. I think they look pretty descent, guess they'll stay for now.

Thanks. I took the plunge and went for the "A" package. I tell ya, I couldn't have been more pleased with the results. The guitar sounded great before it left, but it really opened up after the treatment in a big way. It's still getting better the more it's played. A big thanks to Kim and his crew. These guys are first class all the way. Here's a few more pics.
