• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Great sound on stage, terrible through FOH ?

Hi !
Once upon a time, there was a boy playing with those huge W/D/W rigs, sounded huge on stage BUT oh so terrible through FOH :(
It took me quite a while to find out all the technical reasons why and how speaker miking work and so on.

Since Fractal introduced the Ultra and now the FM3 , problems solved because I play In ear Monitors live and studio speakers at home.

  • For smaller gigs I bring the FM3 only and be done with it...
  • For bigger gigs I bring my Marshall Silver Jubilee as core sound and the FM3 Speaker Sim + post FX

Very curious to hear / see what you have done to deal with them 'nice' sound guys telling you that the guitars are to loud on stage :(

Here is a video of my development over the years :

Sound guys, like in guys that work FOR the band? Never had any problems with them. Sound guys working for the venue were almost always a pain in the a. My vision was always very simple, this is my sound and volume, deal with it.
Yeah , I haven't had many gigs lately...

Who is playing shows during the pandemic?
Who uses big amps any more? (I lament the demise of big amps.)
How does one even hear the house sound while sound checking?
(Dutch Ray, Corpse, and Pat Boyack are correct.)

I find this to be quite right for most of the times......Luckily I am playing with acts who have their own sound engineer and that's a huge relieve ! In the Beginning I always ask how my guitar sound was and If I needed to do somethings with EQ....lately the answer is : Guitars are totally FLAT ;)

I still play theater gigs ( Symphonic Rock) in Holland just the last 3 weeks were again locked down, but in February we look forward to playing again.
Earlier I only brought my Fractal Audio but since some months I bring along my Marshall Silver Jubilee 2555X through Suhr Reactive Load Box into the Fractal Audio FM3 for Speaker Impulses and post FX.....wayyyyyyyy better sound...!!

Yeah the room is a big unknown till you plug in and step forward. And hear what you are playing, even though it will all change once the audience fills up.

Yes, that’s also a common mistake we have to learn the hard way in the beginning….. once the audience fills up we wonder : why does my guitar sound different….??? I did not do anything !!!

Later we can laugh about it 😂😂😂
I learnt that it takes more than only playing the Guitar….. to be a good musician we have to consider all these other factors too….
