When EMGs were first marketed, they were something of a faddish thing ... I had the original humbuckers swapped out of a '68 Custom I was playing at the time...no clue what happened to the humbuckers...


Mind, my Les Paul Custom wasn't even a decade old at that time, and I was never precious with any of my tools.


Said Les Paul Custom had already been stripped of its original finish (the "hippie" finish was a cottage industry in the UK at the time). Peter Frampton used to oblige anyone who wanted to strip their guitar.


We figured if it was good enough for the Beatles, it must be the way forward.


In the same vein, my first Gibson was a '55 Special that previously came to me already stripped (with a groovy psychedelic bird painted on the pickguard).


I compounded my heresies by installing Grovers and having the body drilled so my tech could install an ABR.


They were just used guitars... like Greeny. And they were mine. To do with as I liked.

It is his guitar, he can do with what he wants; he's rescued it from vagaries that may have otherwise befallen it even given the major damage that has come before.

All that said, I'd rather he'd just have stenciled the case. That's more in line with the tradition of its lineage.

But that's just me; hmm, and maybe that 'good steward' thinking kept me as a hobbyist with a profession... not an upstart, impactful musician with the means to acquire.

It is not "his guitar he can do with what he wants" IMHO. I view Kirk as the current caretaker of his instruments, just as I think of myself as the current custodian of my vintage guitars.
Yes he could have found other ways to kill his passing time, rather than carving into this iconic instrument.
Still, I don't think Kirk deserves that much bashing, - maybe blame the dude more, who lent him that pocket knife in the first place...

Yeah the initials makes my skin crawl but I would have the same reaction if it was a brand new guitar and someone did that. It is like the frets in the back of Duane Allmans dark burst. I think that is major sacrilege as well.

Absolutely. It is easy to judge the past based on modern sensibilities. People do it all the time. It’s called cancel culture apparently. I don’t pay much attention to every day modern culture.

I try to look after my stuff but that is just me. There are many who don’t.

You must have mind reading powers. I was just thinking about Mike Bloomfield. As you said though back then it was an old guitar. I know plenty of people who never had cases for their first guitars and just used to lug them everywhere with no case. Obviously I am talking early 2000's for my era and they were all just cheap guitars we could afford, not revered name brands.

I personally will never use a gig bag again, only hard cases but that is purely just my preference. No pressure on anyone else.

The instrument handling that bothers me is when people fly with their guitars and baggage handlers destroy them. Now no defence to baggage handlers. That should never happen but everyone knows how luggage is treated when traveling. It is the worst kept secret ever.

If anyone cares about their instrument at all they should be acting like everyone is out to destroy their stuff and prepare accordingly. Flight cases exist for a reason. The factory hard case I highly doubt were ever designed to go under airplanes.

Whatever works for everyone. I have to live with paranoia issues so I am often treading the line between the rational and irrational. It’s why I try to emphasise that how I do things is just my way. Which is just to keep my brain somewhat relaxed.

Paranoia under control has helped me alot.
Last week before surgery I made a very hard to make component for a komplex industrial machine and it was expensive.
The first one made friday was trash (under tolarences) .... worse than Metallica... but I had to make another one monday.

That one went against the rules with Paranoia as captain.
And it is done and on spec we are talking a 1/1000 mm. Sorry for the of Topic.
