• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Replacing the Kluson style tuners for Grovers on my '92 standard and' 04 R7... Would you do it ?
Have you done it?
These are the questions I'd like to ask those that know.. And as shallow as it may be I just love the look
of a set of worn nickel plate Grovers on a Gibson headstock. I've heard that Grovers could change the tone in some way, if it does it would be great to get some feedback from those with experience.

Yes they add weight to the headstock and do change the guitar's sound a bit.

If you are careful with the installation, the original tuners can be reinstalled without much trouble.

I prefer the look of an original USA set over the current oversees production.

I like how Rotomatics look, but not the added weight.

I have 2 ES-335 that had a dead note on the same string and fret. I removed the Rotomatics and put on Grover 135 tuners. All notes ring out and the guitar stay in tune better. If your guitar currently doesn't have issues, I wouldn't change the tuners.

I could install Grover's on my 92 Les Paul without routing the headstock , the R 7 is a different kettle of fish as I'd have to widen the holes to accommodate the Grovers, so its more involved.

I'll try the Grovers on the '92 and see what I hear over the next few months or so, but given that the Gibson Deluxe tuners with the screwed in bushings are as heavy as the Grovers I'm not sure I'll hear much of a difference.
The lightweight tuners with push in bushings on the R7 are where I'd expect to hear a difference if there is one, but without some positive testimonials from forum members I'm a bit reluctant to go enlarging the
Peg holes just to satisfy my curiosity..
