• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

if it ain't broke don't fix it! i know that isn't the usual philosophy around here (i'm just as guilty as the rest), but sometimes it really is smart. if it stays in tune, and you like the current sound, there is no reason to go chasing after "better" just for the sake of doing it. if you like it, enjoy it. besides, you can't go back once you put them in. if down the road you really have the need for some new tuners, then it will be time to consider the sound differences and the decision of routing.

yes you can go back!!!! You do not have to route all the way through. You only need route from the back, the depth of the Grover sleeve, and that leaves plenty of meat left to put back the push-in bushings of the Klusons. I have done this dozens of times, and once you put the Klusons back in, you would not be able to tell there were Rotomatics on at all.

I will say again, you do NOT have to route all the way through. Plus the Grovers use the same bottom screw hole as well.

I say Grover every last Les Paul on the Planet!! As long as you do it right.

Don't do it.

You still have to rout wood. That's bad. Even if it never shows, it's bad.

My biggest gear regret is routing out my R8 for Grovers because I thought they were "better" than the "Klusons." They're not.

Of course if you Standard is more than a few years old, it would have screw-in bushings and no routing would be needed anyway.

Putting grovers on my LP was the best thing I ever did. Better tone and better tuning ratio.

What the hell does this mean?

So what if you have to drill a bit? I don't think it would devalue a les paul either unless we are talking vintage.

Get the TonePros Klusons. They are a drop in fit, and are a definite step up from the Gibson branded Kluson style tuners. I recently put a set in my '88 Pre-Historic Flame Top RI after falling in love with the TonePros Klusons on my Don Grosh set neck.

I have not experienced the "better tone" and not noticed any real difference in the tuning ratio compared to the "Klusons" on my 01 R8. I like the look- but I don't think the look is worth routing the wood from the guitar.

As far as not devaluing a guitar- sometime down the line, that guitar is going to be considered "desirable," "vintage" or "collectable." Those few ounces of wood reamed out to install Grovers can come back to bite you in the behind a few years down the road. "Back in the day," Norlin guitars were dogs- heavy, gaudy, bright... You had a Norlin because you'd either had it since forever, or it's all you could afford. Take a look at prices for those guitars these days- you'd think they were desirable, eh? I think the guitars Gibson's been building for the past 15 years have been "better" guitars than what Norlin was producing during their tenure of Gibson ownership, and should people continue to play the rock and roll guitar, the guitars of recent vintage will be more highly regarded in terms of quality- if not price, than their Norlin-made counterparts.

My LP stays in tune just fine, but I really hate the look of the green plastic, it just looks cheap! I like the sort of white-ivory color tips, and of course I like grovers but im too lazy and worried to install them. Is there a way to change just the tips of the Klusons or something in that aspect?

its an 05 peter green faded from larry

I have a faded from Larry and I put a set on ... I am one of those people that think a L.P. is not complete until it has Grovers. My set is a nickel set from the 70s I got from ebay.

Go with TonePros Klusons. The gears are tighter and smoother than the stock Gibsons and the buttons are a nice butter cream color and not the snot green of the Gibsons.

I've just ordered these and can't wait to try them out! Guitar tech Charlie Chandler in London swears by them as a good option if you have issues with putting Grovers on... :salude
