Hey guys! Im having a friend of mine build me a 2x12 cabinet for an amp i am purchasing (Marshall Hot Rodded 1974 Small Box). What speakers should i use for a led zeppelin/hendrix/cream tone. Clean tone is very important to me, i want them to be very responsive but still traditional. My friend believes in bracing and uses ply wood (i think) or particle board. He does not use pine or oak because he says it is too heavy and will color your sound too much. All i want is a nice light cab for around 350 dollars. Please help me here, thanks!

Dude, you coulda scored a used Marshall 4x12 in decent shape for that cash. I snatched mine for $400 & it was mint.

I don't have enough speaker experience to make an intelligent recommendation, but a lot of folks like Celestion Vintage 30s or Greenbacks.

Nice score on the amp tho.

Not to mention that you can actually find 2-12 marshall cabs for in the $200-250 area if you look. If you don't like the speakers you can always sell them and get what you want, but at least it will say MARSHALL! Personally, I think the 4-12 is the better way to go for the head you bought, and like Carl said, they can be had cheap also.

Steere, you really oughtta consider a 4x12. Not only do they push more air & sound better 'cos of it, you'll get incredible bass response w/a 4x12. When I bought my Recto, I got a Mesa 1x12 wide body 3/4 back. That little 1x12 sounded big, but when I hooked the 4x12 up, I had to drastically change my eq settings due to the incredible THUMP that mofo had.

Flip side- a 4x12 is a BITCH to transport. But, if you want 'the' sound, you need a 4x12.

Vibroworld.com = fantastic repro 2x12

I own a 71 100wt 1959 head.
After using a "junky" tube works 4x12 for about
6 months, I decided to take the financial plunge for
something with more tone and portability.
I had vibroworld make me a replica Marshall
1936 cab (circ 1972). I had two Celestion V-30s
ready which I had ordered from Music123.com.
The combo of the closed back Vibrosound 2x12 cab,
and the Vintage 30s is everything a Marshall tone junky
like me could ever want. The 30s really seem to tighten
up on the bottom in this well made cab.

My total cab cost including speakers was just at $600.
My back is saved, and tone vastly improved. Believe me,
for a sweet, controlable stage volume, its hard to beat
this set up

Zack at Vibrosound.com can hook you up with a cab to
your specs for a reasonable cost for sure. Celestion
30s will handle your heads output and give you plenty
of headroon for clean, and the classic brittish distortion
when cranked.

Dave, you crack me up...

2 4 x12s are a bit out of my price range, and it seems as though the vibrosound site is down for now... a 4 x12 is not practical for me right now, i dont have much room as it is and i have to bum rides from my bassist all the time, and he has 2 1x15 cabs and a 4x12 wont fit in his acura :). Just too heavy for me for now my friend... oh well, im taking donations for a 4x12 if anybody wants...

Tell your bass player to buy a van!:lol2 If he sells his Acura, He can get a 76 Dodge tradesman with 3 on the tree and have plenty left over to buy you a stack!;)
If he doesnt go for it, tell him he's out of the band!:)spin
