• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Weighing in on your question about 57 Classics, for whatever it's worth.

I like them quite a bit. They can be a little bright or even brittle depending on what guitar you put them in and what amp you use, and of course, your playing/picking style.

To my ear they lack some warmth, particularly in the neck position but the peak frequency (in practical terms, the tonal character of the attack when you pick the string) is absolutely perfect for me. Normally you would think the answer to this problem is a hotter wound pickup to bring out the bass and low-mids. But even slightly hotter wound pu's, even its sister, the 57 C-Plus, have a peak freq that is unacceptably low for my ear. Such pu's are usually designed for the bridge position anyway, so that's no solution.

How to solve this dilemma? Replace the 57's Alnico 2 magnets with Alnico 5's. VOILA!

My 59 is set up with a 57C in the neck and a 57C-Plus in the bridge, both with Alnico 5 magnets. Warmth and punch from both ends while not sacrificing that classic crystal clear timbre on the attack. KILLER clean sounds.

My 3 cents anyway.

(Hey, we have to start adjusting even our cliches for inflation sooner or later)...

He might come back. He didn't cop anywhere near the attitude some of the newcomers have. Besides, the 3 cents might be useful to someone else.

Maybe....

He was the classic case of somebody grossly uneducated in LPs. I don't see why he left, but if you're going to argue about LPs, you really need a serious understanding of them before you open your mouth, because its a big scary place. When he said he didn't see any obvious changes in the LPs over the years, that was a major clue.

We've seen far worse. A touch of sarcasm at times but some got a little uppity with him first. I have no problem with him asking those questions because, as you say, his knowledge on the topic is pretty sparse at best and he definitely needs to do some A/B'ing of Historics with his Standard as we suggested.

If he were to say something like his voluted Norlin Standard (he wouldn't know Norlin or about volutes but you get the idea) blows away Historics and started calling us names like the Epi+Rio Grande strain of virus we've run into recently, well...

<CHICK-chack.....>

Hey, I gave you credit for your insight, Kreig. Remember? I knew you were right and I tried to help that guy anyway, but he just wouldn't cooperate. :dead:

If you're used to paying $1,000 or less for a guitar, I understand the intimidation factor of a $2,000-4,000+ price tag for just one guitar. I was there in the not too distant past. But one day, I just said "(your favorite expletive deleted) it, I'm not getting any younger and I've been drooling over these things for over 20 years! Damn the credit card bills and FULL SPEED AHEAD!"

I'm now up to my eyeballs in debt but to anyone who asks, I say that if I had to do it over again, I'd buy ten times as many LP's if I could have. I'd be wiser in looking for better deals knowing what I know now, but otherwise, ZERO regrets.

No-one gets it until they finally take the plunge. Even so, it is our duty to spread the word:

"Go ye into all the world and preach the (Historic) gospel to every creature."

I can just see me in front of my credit union manager, "I've almost got the truck paid off, now how about upping my credit card a few thousand, I have a Les Paul I need to get, and a basketweave cabinet" .... "Yeah, its a business need. I play in a band" :lol2

I have no clue who it is but I expect you to give me some clues along the way? Point me in the right direction. You finally convinced me this last guy was a troll but it took me a while to see it?
