• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Hey it's Mat from Gibson Product Development - AMA

Larry Allers. I get it now. Just curious, are these 60th Anniversary SG’s a limited run or will they continue to be made?
:) They are indeed limited; there may be a few orders that trickle out but they are officially discontinued.

I said this in a post quite a while ago.... 1. I am sure that Gibson had to purchase a large quantity of A3 and therefore need to use them. 2. Cobalt was in high demand during the Vietnam war... A3 does not have Cobolt so it would make
sense that around that time Gibby would have had to use A3 for a few years..
Very cool, did not consider that!

Thanks so much for your reply Mat. So, so helpful!

Two follow up questions for you.
1. Are there different grades of maple you can ask for with M2M? For instance, plain, slightly figured, A, AA, AAA, quilted, etc? I’d assume price would increase with grade?
2. Aside from thickness, is there any difference between the 58 and 59 profiles? Are the shoulders any different?
1. Yes but you can only go up with pricing for a given platform -- i.e. no price reduction for using plain instead of the standard flame spec on a '59 Reissue LP. Our grading categories are a little different at Custom, although I'm not sure if this is consumer-facing: R for handpicked highly figured, B for highly figured, A for lightly figured and P for plain. Continuing the example, a '59 Reissue LP is already spec'd for R or B while a '58 Reissue is spec'd for P.
2. Different shoulders for sure...'59 is a little more of a V shape...very subtle but it's there. '58 is a classic round C-shape. And thicker as you said. Also remember that narrow/tall frets are standard on a '58 as is historically accurate.

Hi Mat

Do you use african mahogany on Gibson USA guitars.

Kind regards
It is all Central American mahogany as far as I'm aware, but double-checking.

Edit: We have used African Mahogany in the past, but confirmed that we are not currently using any in production (at any factory).

Apologies if this has been addressed, but my searching hasn't turned up much.

I just picked up a 64 Reissue SG - are these Custombuckers the same as the ones in my 57 Reissue Les Paul Custom? As in, same design spec --I know there will be variation among individual pickups from the same series.

Also, the 63 Reissue Lightning Bar SG Special - what is the neck spec for Authentic '63 Medium C-Shape? Similar to the 64? Despite much searching, I can't find a measurement spec anywhere in the whole googleverse :)

My 2019 R8 doesn’t seem to, at least IMO, have narrow/tall frets. They look very similar to a 2013 Benchmark Series Explorer I have. They’re more a medium height and width IMO.

I’ve not found the exact specs online of the 2019 Custom Shop Les Pauls (nothing on the Legacy Gibson site either). Are the 2019 R8 frets actually considered narrow/tall?

Hi Mat,

Do you know anything about the special edition runs the Bozeman factory did in 1993? I have a SJ-200 that is marked as a limited run out of 36. It is very similar to other SJ-200s, but has a stinger on the back of the headstock with a gold plaque saying "Montana Special", has triple ply binding on the fretboard, has a 5 piece neck, and has an ebony board and bridge. It came with a signed certificate with Ren Ferguson listed as the luthier. Did Ren actually take part in building these, or did he just help come up with the specs? I appreciate any insight you may have on these models!

Not trying to be vapid in saying this, but you can remove it yourself.
I bought a brand new guitar last weekend and one of the pickups did not have any label or decal on the back of it. I’m just a bit worried about it.

MATT -

are the Historics ever rejected at the factory on the basis of "sound " - not "looks" ?

so in other worlds lets say a guitar looks fine - maybe even great - but the particular pieces of wood on a very rare occasion just did not yield a nice sounding Historic - would the guitar be rejected and relegated to the trash heap ?

Okay I get the picture, and not to preempt anything that Mat might reply with.
However over the years I've had the same thing with Custombuckers, no sticker/decal in some Customshop LPs and 335s I've bought since 2013 when these were put in the guitars.

That's hot and I love the color because it's different in a good way . Make it metallic and it's twice as hot . Also it looks really good with the gold hardware .

Yup, zoom in, I am fairly certain there's slightly metallic base color, it's just the purple is very dark... If it were Lefty, we'd know for sure!

I got a reply! From the M2M director: we can do trans purple (stain), plum crazy (metallic), and purple sparkle (metalflake).

Thanks Mat!

I'm interested in the "plum crazy" finish.

Should I contact The Music Zoo again, and tell them that I wish for my M2M order to be in that particular finish?

Would The Music Zoo be able to assist me at that point?

What would you advise me to do?
