• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Does that mean I should essentially copy-and-paste the specs from the Gibson website to the email that I'll end up sending to The Music Zoo?
I know it's a pain but cover your fanny and repeat the process and leave nothing to chance and even follow it up with a phone call as well to make sure your specs are followed to the letter . Don't Trust , but verify and verify as you are paying good money for what you want !

Working on it! It's here with me but we haven't settled on the price. What do you guys think it's worth?

I call TMZ at least monthly. But they're so busy that they keep me on hold up until I hang up out of impatience. So I end up bombarding them with emails.

By the way, in my email, I emphasized to them that the "Plum Crazy" finish must cover every inch of the LP, and not just the front. I don't want my M2M to have color on the front and bare wood on the back like you see on some LPs sold online.

I don't want to feel like I'm worrying too much.

But what are the chances of the CS totally screwing up the paint job on my M2M LP and applying the color only to the front of the body?

Gibson Custom will get it right every single time . What could go wrong is the Dealer could get the specs wrong and then you are messed up . Do your due dilligence as you are paying top $ . Best Wishes

Why is Gibson soaking people $800 more for white paint versus ebony paint on a LP Custom? This happened within the last year I believe. No lies, no truth stretching. Why?

I've mentioned this several other times in this thread, but it's because of additional complexity, plain and simple. Painting gloss white nitrocellulose lacquer guitars requires an extreme level of care through the finish department to avoid particles in the air as well as additional coats. The difference is commensurate with the M2M upcharge for this finish as well.

Question for @matkoehler:
Are the new pickups in the 2023 reissues now?
Also when will Gibson pick dark fretboards for the reissues???

Thanks 🙏
Not sure what you mean by new pickups. We launched the Pickup Shop officially late last year. But reissues are still spec'd with Custombuckers.

All Reissues are spec'd for dark rosewood fingerboards. Hand sorted. If yours does not appear dark, it may be dry. Use some fingerboard conditioner to hydrate! :)

Hey @matkoehler are you able to tell me if current CS P90's are different from Gibson USA P90's? ...I can't find any specs on the P90's used in CS Les Paul's, specifically which magnets are used and whether they are unpotted like 50's P90's.
Both Alnico V, both same base spec. Custom Shop uses different covers. That's about it. It's the original P90 recipe so not much variation. We are working on aftermarket variants to launch this current year (like underwound, overwound, etc).

Hey Mat —

Regarding Gibson’s current-era ‘CustomBucker Alnico III Unpotted’ pickups…

With respect to the established product architecture for Custom Shop Les Paul Reissue guitars, i.e. excluding Artist, Dealer-Spec, Made-to-Measure request, or any other ‘limited edition’ offerings:
  • Is there *ANY* difference in specification for CustomBuckers [winds, wire, magnet attributes, etc.] used in Murphy Lab (ML) versus non-ML aka VOS/Gloss Historic Reissue guitars?

If YES, how would one know? The only apparent indication for ML would be aged covers... which I understood to be purely aesthetic.
  • We see PAF stickers on all versions, and sometimes (N)eck and (B)ridge designations in black marker within a balance set.
  • ‘WW’ black marker on Wildwood spec
  • ’S’ black marker for CME spec
  • We are now seeing white labels on ‘red box’ sets from the Gibson Pickup Store.
  • If there’s an ML specification, wouldn’t there be some indication? Or marketing of same?
Further:
  • Any purposeful differentiation between CustomBuckers sets used in ML versus non-ML via metrics, benchmark testing, or any other segregation process (picking, matching) as they go from shelf into guitar?

Please: If there’s proprietary ‘voodoo’ going on for ML vice non-ML CustomBuckers it’s OK to state a purposeful differentiation exists without going into specific detail.

Thanks, Happy New Year!

[PS: BTW this is to provide insight for discussion happing in another thread.]
No, no difference in spec. Murphy Lab is a finish treatment, essentially. Same under the hood.
