How does a locking trem affect tone of a LP?

There is an addendum to the dealer contract that prohibits installing a locking tremolo on Les Pauls. Dealers found in violation face a fine of up to $50,000 and possible loss of dealership. They are also required to confiscate instruments and report any violations immediately.

I wouldn't mention it to anyone.

A pal o' mine had a Kahler put on a cherry red LPS (like the Harrison/Clapton one) and it really killed the tone. Very little wood was removed but the sound became much thinner, almost tinny. He sold the guitar a short while later and took a large loss.

Anyone who pus a locking trem on a Les Paul will be shot on sight. I sold my last LP Custom, a 1982 model from Kalamazoo with a custom ( electric blue) color, to Neal Schon, who promptly threw a Floyd on it.
Neal's been so scared I don't think he has set foot in Texas without a bodyguard ever since.;)

Just kidding. It wasn't NEAL- it was his guitar tech at the time.

That's right. Neil uses PRS guitars. :) But they all do have Floyds on them instead of the standard PRS bridges.

Back in the 80's I bought a very nice Carvin and completely screwed it by putting a Kahler on it. I learned a valuable lesson. I think some les pauls came with a Kahler and I'm sure they suffered the same fate. Too bad because the Kahler was a pretty good unit but it ate sustain for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Actually, Neil just ordered five Les Pauls from the Custom Shop with Floyds on them. Before he ordered them, they were absolutely positive there was no market for a Floyd-equipped Lester. Hmmmmm...

No trems please

Floyd Rose trems are okay trems, great for van-halen-esque dive bombs but they are the biggest tone and sustain killers on a guitar. Any floyd equipped guitar to my ears sounded wimpy and thin. You'd need all these electronic gizmos to make your guitar sound acceptable....I remember all that guitar rack crap in the 80's.

Had 2 guitars equipped with Floyds.....didn't keep them for long. Sold them for beer money (get almost next to nothing for 'em) I'd never use them because I used my Paul most of the time.
