• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

I am seeing a lot of different color Goldtops lately ....

recently I have noticed many different colors on the Goldtops.

From a classic greenish bronze color ,,,, to a much more pure copper color on a new Murphy to a crazy lime green copper historic at Guitar Center this week.

that last one was really wild and the tag claimed it was a gold top historic

I have seen hundreds of them in my life - none like that

so thats at least (3) highly different looking Goldtops in a week

anyone else notice this ? ..... I thought they settled on the top formulation years agO ... :hmm

Gibson Custom over the years has made runs of custom color R7' and R8's. Red, blue, green and black tops to name a few.
I'm not aware of a gold color variation, unless aged.

There have been variations in the gold color over the years and within given years. As I understand it, they formulate the gold paint by mixing bronze powder into clear lacquer. I think that sometimes the painter just doesn't follow the recipe.

The color of my 2003 R7 looks quite vintage-like, but my 2006 CR7 had a very light gold color that didn't look vintage at all.

That light gold color on the 2006 CR7 annoyed me everytime I looked at it, so I painted the top black:

In 2014 the CS began adding green dye into the gold paint to simulate the greening effect when he bronze oxidizes, but some of them came out simply looking like they were tinted green and not at all like an oxidized finish.

Here's a photo I found of a greenish 2014 R7, but I recall seeing some 2014 R7s that were much greener than this.

CS have sometimes been all over the place with the GTs gold over the years since 2003.............. but mainly since around 2011.
Some of the sprays this year are just diabolical.......one being a lime green(and called a GT)..............no gold in them there hills I'm afraid:hmm

2014 R4 next to a 2015 HS4 - Just one year apart and they changed the paint quite a bit.

HS and TH are the same. They changed that formula quite a bit...

Key for those that don't get the codes:
R are Historics
TH are the True Historics
HS are the Historic Selects which was an M2M program on True Historic Specs
