Hey Guys,

thanks so much everyone for your advice re the Les Paul Specials in my earler thread. I just bought one - it's a NOS 1996 model, Heritage Cherry...sweeet except for the P100 pickups.

I've never owned a P90 guitar before, so I'm clueless as to replacement P90 pickups! :(

I want some P90 pickups with TONE! Pickups that can get real nasty and gritty when I want them too, but also clean up nicely when I back off. Clarity and detail are important to me. Please could I have your suggestions???

Cheers,
EL34

For what it's worth, I love the Dunan P90's that came in the PRS McCarty I had.

Many times you can pickup older Gibson P90's that sound great too. At guitar shows I have picked them up very reasonable prices. In general they have all the honk you could ask for in a P90. I tried a newer Gibson P90, and could not say the same thing.

Good luck

Kevin

I've heard nothing but good about the Harmonic Design P90's. I personally would try those or try to find vintage Gibson P90's.

I must be the only idiot who actually LIKES the P-100's! I think they sound great. Much better than the P-90's. Sorry!

Soapbars

The P90s that PRS puts in their McCarty Soapbars kick ass. I know they're Duncans, but can't remember which, exactly. I've heard some people knock the P90s (Dimarzio, I believe) that McInturff uses, but the 3-P90 Royal I have absolutely rules.

FWIW, I used to be a humbucker snob- I HATED single coils. Now, my TCM is the 1st guitar I pick up 90% of the time. No knock on LP's, mind you, I'm just still infatuated w/that honkin, greazy P90/mahogany sound.
