The children are NOT our future.

From Harmony Central.

"Best Pickups for Gibson SG Standard in drop tuning
what are the your best picks for pickups (humbuckers) to replace in a gibson sg standard for drop tuning 2 steps down (C) ?

music played is going to be melodic death metal also able to do a hardcore punch - and neck pickup must be able to do smooth, cutting solos that arent overly bassy or muddy at all."

I'm trying to come up with a comment, but I can't. Simply speechless.

Re: I have bad new for ya'll

quite common these days. it's a race to the bottom. they all think that they can be a "heavier" band if they can tune lower than the next guy.... that and plug into a mesa dual or triple rectifier. it's a shame really. they don't know how to be heavy with songwriting skills so they try and do it with the gear. EVERY mesa dual/triple rectifier i sell is demoed with the EQ set like this too:

gain: 10
bass: 10
mids: 0
treble: 10
presence: 10
volume: as high as i will allow them to

then they want the guitar tuned as low as they can possibly get it. to them, that is "tone". it's all about how much distortion they can get, and how low can they tune the thing..... usually an Ibanez.
on the bright side, these kids suck so bad that i don't think there is much of a threat of them taking it too far.

(BTW, before anyone jumps on me..... i am a young, hard-rock loving guitar player that lives on the dirtiest channel of my amp)

Re: I have bad new for ya'll

I see it this way. We all have our phases, and aren't 'cool' 100% of the time.

There was a time where I thought CC Deville was the $hit, then the bass player from Winger, then it was Slash (well, sort of still is :) ), then Zak Wydle, then Clapton, then Hendrix, then Wes Montgomery, then Prince, etc. etc...

In each phase I had the gear, but not the fingers. It's all evolutionary man.

Re: I have bad new for ya'll

My son, who had a hardcore band for a while, finally decided after all these years that a loud mic'd bass drum, 5 string bass and 7 string guitar means that everyone is vying for the same frequency spectrum. He recorded 2 CDs worth of mud. Interesting mud, enthusiastic mud, but incomprehesible mud just the same.

Now he wants to buy an autoharp and a banjo :bh :wha :bug

Josh Homme is the only guitarist who tunes that low that's worth listening to.

actually, i can think of 2 others:

Kim Thayil (soundgarden)
Adam Jones (tool)

you have to be a real musician to be able to get away with that stuff.

btw.... neither of the 2 i listed do it all the time. just sometimes.

Re: I have bad new for ya'll

Well, Id rather have my kids playing death metal in my basement ( or in your store :) ) than sitting in front of the playstation 8 hrs a day. The kids are the future and it is our responisibilty as parent to expose them to everything so that they will get a well rounded musical education. My 6yr old already knows a quite a bit of halen, wylde, albert king, kiss, priest, zeppelin bb king.

It is ashame after SoundGarden went bust you dont hear much from Kim. Great guitarist!!! One of my favorite songs - 4th Of July - is tuned down to a dropped C :! Real heavy dark tune...I have a guitar just set up with that exact tuning for that song - which then led me to a whole new mindset of playing with that tuning....Thanks Kim!!!!!!!

I tune down a step and a half and put a capo on the 3rd fret, then I play everything in G but it's really E. It's just so cool.....everybody is like "DUDE!!!!"

while i'm thinking about it........ them playing in the store is cool. i only ever have 2 problems with it:
1) very inconsiderate people who just want to crank a dual rect as loud as possible for as long as possible regardless of other customers. they hae no consideration for others in the room, no intention of ever buying anything, and think we are there just to give them a place to be loud. i specifically remember myself being less selfish than this.

2) parents who drop their kids off with us for literally 6 hours at a time b/c they think we are the free babysitter. we are not. the kids coming by are ok, but we aren't here to take care of them. if you want us to babysit, then you need to pay babysitter fees to us.

i have had parents tell me that they are dumping kids off because they don't want to pay for a babysitter and they would rather have them tear up our store than tear up their house. i have had kids tell me that they think we leave stuff plugged in so that they can have a place to be loud without their parents yelling at them (as if that is the only purpose). we have had one kid (when asked if we could help with anything) tell us, "nah, i'm just here to tear some shit up.) about 3 seconds later he was on the street.

ok, rant over.

I hate to admit it...but I LOVE the song "figured you out" by Nickleback. Drop something tuning...but just a great song with even better lyrics. I thought our band may cover it one time so I practiced it in the drop tuning...very cool coming out of Marshall on 8. It gets old after about 1/2 hour though.

I'm not all that sure what the exact definition is. To my ears it seems to be anything directly descended from Black Sabbath's "Master Of Reality" album though, which has got to be a good thing. And I forgot about Kim Thayil, his playing is much missed.

I'll have to admit, when I read some of the posts like the one I originally posted, I have to chuckle because what it reminds me of is that I was exactly the same as a pup. I wanted to be Buck Dharma so bad that I grew a mustache and cut my hair like him. If anyone can post a photo for me, I can prove it. And I recently found an ancient cassette of me playing circa '74 that I should bury at a crossroads at midnight tonight.

I'm just having fun, I just thought that HC post was a classic. I'm as guilty as anyone of being a goober, then and now.
