I never gave Les Pauls a second thought until about 25 years ago when I was contacted by a renowned singer whose record company wanted her to start working on a new album after her solo debut was getting attention. She loved my playing, but said that she preferred a Gibson humbucker sound for rhythm. I was playing a heavily modified Fender Strat at the time. I thought, "okay, I'll check them out." I went to GC and tried out some Epis that were on sale. I didn't see what the big deal was. I then tried out a 68 Custom RI. Oh, this was different. I was off to the races, feverishly checking out and buying Gibson Les Pauls like I was Jim Carroll chasing junk in The Basketball Diaries. At one time I had about 10 of them, including a 57 GT RI. Eventually sold off all but my 01 Classic. In the last couple of years I got an 18 GT Classic with Bigsby, a 22 Tribute, and a 23 Greeny Standard. The thing is, I may glance at other kinds of guitars by the Les Paul has me captive like a girlfriend I was obsessed with 20 years ago. I can no longer play my Strat because it feels so foreign. I can't seriously consider buying other types of guitar because there might be another Les Paul around the corner. Back when I was a "normal" guitar player I would choose the best guitar for the job. Now I pick the closest to the best Les Paul for the job and wrestle with in until it works. It's a curse. Thank you for letting me share...
