Marc, your note reminds me of a Twilight Zone episode, the one where the father becomes obsessed with his daughter's doll, and it kills him.

In my case, I don't feel overwhelmed and dominated by them, but do plan to reduce the herd a bit.
Hey Mike…I’m guessing in your case a Wildwood Slub Collection consignment would be the easiest way to move things for yourself

That's a bold move! I presume even though you only just broke even it's been a therapeutic feeling?

I've moved 5 in the last year or so that I haven't played much (and 3 in the last few months) but I've then bought 3 since, along with some other gear which I'm much happier with. I've started a policy of keeping an account which is proceeds from gear sales, and only allowing myself to spend what's in there. I'm at a point now where I know there's one or two I could sell and be fine with but am feeling very attached to the rest, (which is 15 in total) or they'd be hard to sell or I'd not get as much back for them as I paid.

Tbh.. my collection was always viewed as a kind of investment/cash release for when I needed/wanted it.. and with the pending move the cash will help if needed.. that said .. I’ve recently had been thinking that a good 2/3rds of the guitars I owned were not being used.. and even the 8 or so that were on a weekly rotation.. I would have pretty much the same sound.. regardless if single coil or humbucker..and having so many guitars was starting to grate on me..in a practical sense and then quite unexpectedly I just called a guitar shop owner, who I knew, and said “come over I’m selling” and without hesitation he said I’ll be over after work lol… I had a view of, if he gets to the number in my head.. I’ll sell.. and knowing I was selling to a store .. I gave him dealer prices.. on all of them.. a good 5-8 guitars I bought really cheap years ago and 2 I got for nothing via bands etc.. so I knew I’d break even at worst.. he was actually really decent with his purchases.. as they were some he didn’t actually want but took them.. and we both ended up on common ground and happy’ish.. which in my book is a fair deal for both.

in regards to why I chose to sell.. I think I just want a fresh start.. bone down the collection and stuff (will sell my vinyl collection after I move too) and invest the money back into a maximum of 8-10 guitars.. if actually needed.. as my playing style and sound is really basic and clean.. and I don’t require much.. so if I feel after playing just 3 that I have left.. that it’s good enough.. then so be it..

the 3 I kept are the ones that I love dearly and will never sell.. and quite frankly they cover the tone bases in my head and will definitely suffice in a studio environment/live.

i will continue to be keeping an eye of the market as I’m hooked.. and if there is a deal to good to pass, I’ll probably pick it up.. but if it results in me not playing it much.. I’ll send it down the line..

Things is would consider getting again in “want” order

• Sg 61 vibrola standard or custom shop
• Lp 57/58/59/60 true historic (all)
• Srat avri with rosewood neck
• 335 standard or custom shop

I sold a lot over the past three years guitars , amps . Down to 5 Historic guitars 5 amps .
I'm getting ready to move.

My kids are BEGGING me to sell some gear as they know it's worth something, but don't want to deal with it when I croak.

My problem is.....I keep looking at and amp or guitar and say "I could part with that but I bought it because XYZ."

XYZ wins.

Both parties happy-ish is the best that can be expected.
If both parties are happy one of them is doing drugs.

You're scaring me because you're making me realise I have 3x double humbucker Les Pauls and pretty much chase the same sound with them all, and probably the ES-335 and PRS McCarty too! I doubt I would be unhappy if I whittled them down to just one, it's just a question of which one. The irony is I play a strat in my band and now only have one of those (sold two others recently) because it does the job, but I tend to play an HH guitar most of the time at home. The strat is just right for the band (7-piece with another LP playing guitarist).

Everyone has their own reasons to collect guitars ..
I’ve just come to realisation that .. my main interest is actually playing the guitar.. and having so many was impractical in a user sense.. as I said ..my sound is very basic and I’d achieve the actual same sound regardless of what I was playing (with tweaks to the pedals) and there was always the view of selling at some point.. which I’ve done sooner than expected.. but I want clean slate.. back to basics.. I have three guitars that covers the tone and playing spectrum.. and I want to connect more with these three.. and concentrate on playing/practicing more, rather than adding to the collection.
I can’t express how cathartic the experience was/is.. my only regret (not a regret) is that I should’ve kept the 57 TH.. but.. I did stipulate in the sale that I want the chance to buy back anything if still available.. at cost. That said.. they are available.. so no issues there really.. plus I know I’ll add a LP soon enough..

Also.. freeing up that amount of cash.. is somewhat a relief to have in the account. As you never know what’s around the corner.

Basically I think I’m saying I can actually be called an adult now. lol.

Down here at the bottom of the globe is the pits for second hand gear
