has anyone here left the stock shorter steel bushings in place and simply deepened the hole to allow for longer studs ?

Just curious as to why he'd want to do it.

Not rocket science, just run a drill bit very slowly just a bit smaller than the bushing thread ID.

to leave the original short steel bushings in place and not disturb the finish, LOL
to use the vintage studs I have and try a topwrap, LOL
wasn't a question on how to do it, but rather if anyone else has, LOL
not rocket science LOL

There's probably a fair chance they'll install without any further modification. A lot of times the bushing holes are slightly deeper than the bushing length, and due to the drill bit geometry the center is slightly deeper.

that would make sense but no they bottom out when tight which has about 1/4" of threads showing, LOL

I did that about 7 years ago on my trusty ol 2009 R8.
And actually removed some wood a bit smaller in diameter than the thread of the studs so the stud would thread in to the wood.
Had to, because when tightening (i'm a tailpiece down to the body type) the longer studs, i figured the wood would be soft enough to force the stud in a bit..
But it's hard as nails and the stud pushed the bushing up, so a little had to be removed, about (2,5mm)

Gary, it’s hard, near impossible to remove the inserts without taking that layer of lacquer that sits on top away also. And you need to remove them to drill deeper. If you go this way ensure you score with a sharp Exacto knife around the top of the inserts and you should be fine then...no flaking if surrounding lacquer.

Your theory is sound though, in that following the gentle deepening of the holes you’ll be able to use longer studs with shorter inserts.

thanks Grant ..I'm definitely not going to pull the originals ..they're steel anyway and although a little shorter I see no need too

There's most likely a reasonable possibility they will introduce with no further alteration, a ton of times the bushing gaps are marginally more profound than the bushing length and because of the boring apparatus geometry the inside is somewhat more profound

If you are really careful, you could drill a bit deeper through the bushings, then run a tap down through the bushing to gain the extra depth.

Official Locking Studs Establishment Guide . in the body of your guitar, and they should "dial directly in" effectively, as long as you have the accurately strung parts.

Not certain if I understand... Is this to make It more Period correct. On various guitars I have had, I would use the longer stud to fill up space and couple more with the body... Long or short anchors... either way. If I had short or the Regular sized Stud and they were snug... then I'd leave it.
Just a imo
