• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Is it real, or is it Photoshop??

I was recently was playing around on EBAY with one of the scammers trying to sell a 56 Goldtop. For fun I emailed him (through one of my hotmail accounts), He wants $6500. I told him I was would like to buy the guitar, but before I bought it, I needed him to send me a picture of the guitar with a note that included my email address. Well guess what? He sent the picture with my email address... I'm still not going to send him money, but the photo looks legit...

Anyone have any thoughts on this??? :wha :wha

That same guitar is on ebay right now with a bid of $20K plus. I believe the guitar is a '55 and the seller is known to some around here.

Do you have a link to the scam auction?

If one is making letters on a sign that are as big as these would be if it were real, one would print them or "draw" them. They wouldn't end up looking like manuscript. The guy took a picture of his own manuscript and blew it up. Also, the corners wouldn't be "tucked in" behind the guitar like that.

If it is PSed, he did a good job on the shadows.
You should ask for his address, if you're paying $6500 for a guitar, it'd be worth flying in to check it out before paying him.

The printing on the card may not be real, but the card looks good.

Did anybody blow this up and check?

I don't see anything in the pixels that looks fake, but I'm not a pro.

Ask him to take it again, same angle, only this time with the card slipped under the strings.

That'd give a fake away.

I'd have to have the original file make a better judgement, but the card at least seems legit. The print looks a bit off, but overall I can't say either way, given the fact that it's a hosted image. That can play tricks on real pictures, especially ones with small file sizes.

I wouldn't make a determination either way. BUT, given the fact that someone else has this guitar listed, etc... I'd steer clear.

Have any of you guys ever sold anything on Ebay? If I get these kinds of emails, I steer clear of the guy like the plague. Whenever you get an email to the effect of "Hey could you take 20 more pictures of the back of the headstock and oh...by the way...can you describe the guitar's sound?," you need to BLOCK that sumbitch's email because he ain't gonna be nuthin' but trouble! :bh

Well spoken. If the first email is simply for more pics you're wasting your time responding. Not once in 10 years of selling over the net has anybody that asked for more pics with the first inquiry about an item ever bought anything.

Should be easy to spot if it's exactly the same pic from the original auction, just with the card added, IMO.

I've just read on the homepage that is linked to the original auction that the seller decided to end the auction and keep the guitar, because of too much scam and people questioning his integrity. :toobad

Boy you got that right! Why are all tire kickers alike? :bug What is even more irritating is when you have tons of high resolution pictures showing every crevice of the guitar, and the yahoo asks, "Could you describe its condition?" :2lol

This is why I rarely sell on ebay or advertise any of my guitars for sale -- too much bother...

I've been in the ad biz as a Creative Director for a few years and I've learned a real good retouch artist can make anything look real. And sometimes real photos look fake.

Nothing, but nothing, beats seeing the item in person.
