• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Is the Gibson 335 The Best Guitar Ever Made?

IMO close second to the Tele. These two and a Martin 000-18 are really all I need to cover 99.9% of the sounds I want. :peace2

It’s hard to argue that point... I was always of the mind the tele was the most versatile..... I find myself picking up my 64 Custom Shop way more than my teles.

My ES-335 is my Cold Dead Hands guitar.
I even had a truss rod cover engraved to that effect.

It’s a run-of-the-mill 2002 Dot Reissue in Cherry red transparent.
Bought it new.

A couple of years ago, I added a Bigsby via the Towner adapter kit.
Until then, the only mods I had ever even considered were the Schaller straplock pins.

Only thing I could imagine that would be better is possibly an old school ES-330 set up the same way.

Hard to argue for sure. The 345 and 355 (which I have) might be slightly more so, since they can have a varitone switch, which gives you more tonal options.

The ES-345 works for me! "The Burst Killer" as they are called.
The "'Burst killer" moniker is traditionally reserved for "first-rack" ES345s from 1959...but indeed, just about any ES335, ES345, or ES355 are extraordinarily versatile instruments.

I can confirm that an ES 330 is an excellent companion to the Dot Reissue ES 335. (y)

Ooooooooohhhhhh!!!!!

HELL yeah!!!!

I’ve owned several other hollow electrics over the years, experimenting when I stumbled across one at a decent price.

Different brands.
Trying to find something with big single coils that might replicate the ES-330.
I’ve sold them all.

I’ve had several 330s in my hand over the years, very nice but pricey.
Each time, I decided against it and kept my wallet in my pocket.

The prices on them keep going up and up and up…

I'm very happy that I got to buy a new 335 in 2013 when the dollar was at it's all time low against the Norwegian Krone, and I will never sell it if I can avoid it. However, I don't think a 3xx can do very much more than any other guitar from Gibson with an H-H PAF-like setup could do. And it certainly can't do what a really nice and traditional Strat or Tele can do... or a P90 fitted Gibson etc. That's why we always want more guitars, isn't it?
