• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

I'm also certain had these two modern-day guitar virtuoso's stood up there stone faced and played it note for note, ala Cream, some would have said, "Geez guys, why didn't you let the dogs out?"

For my money, (and it cost me nothing) I thought it was a nice dueling jam to a song that begs for balls out guitar.

"I have my principles, if you don't like those, I have more." - Groucho Marx.

I love that quote!

I haven't listened to ZW for ages but I thought he played and sounded pretty awful here - not at all what I was expecting from him.

I haven't listened to Bonnamassa much at all but he sounded very good. Vocals were tight too….

Am I alone in thinking it was horrible?

Nope.

I will qualify this by saying that although Zakk is a great player, he was certainly outclassed during this performance...particularly during the trading licks section around 7mins. JB's clarity and tone were exceptional as always...just my 2p!

I would argree the skynrd version on from the road is pretty good. Except for a bit in the middle its pretty much a note for note cover of claptons guitar solo but its not sterile. I assume that's allan collins, and then doubling himself in the studio later?

Yes, Lynyrd Skynyrd's version on One More From The Road. My favorite. Actually got to play it with Artimus Pyle!

I loved it. It was fast, it was fun, & it was a lot of notes. I think it is cool that Joe shares the stage w/so many other guitarists. It keeps it fresh & unpredictable.
Two things, though-
1. Zakk's guitar resembles an evil alien from a japanese sci-fi movie:

2. The area rug Joe is standing on is upside down, isn't it? Shouldn't the audience be able to read it?

Very enjoyable. These days I value phrasing over shredding, and Joe's phrasing was extra good. It makes me realize how good Clapton is.

That's the worst place to watch a band from all the way up there if you'r predominantly going to listen to them. I think the whole aesthetic of the band and the backline looks terrible and that carpet is horrid.

Zakk needs to stop playing too fast just for the sake of it and take a listen to his own Pride and Glory CD to remind himself how it's done.

Oh, and ditch those ridiculous guitars he keeps showing up with. :2cool

It's not that he is playing fast. Al Dimiola plays fast as does Frank Gambale, Steve Moorse and a host of others. All of them wojld have done well on this song. The issue is he is not playing to the song. The rest of the band could be playing a black label society tune or blues etc and he is playing the same way despite what they are playing. Reminds me of hearing Noe Satriani trying to play jazz a few years back. It just did not fit.

Here ZW is not paying attention to the chord changes or feel of the tune.

I was thinking it was the other way around, schooled by the metal master!

I don't think of music as a competition...just expression. That said I think ZW's take on this tune ignored the music being played.

I think both of them play guitar but have yet to really play any music....sorry....It's never about the song....it's about the guitar and what they can do with the guitar....not the actual music that is made....Robert Johnson made a song...he just happened to use a guitar to do it....it was about a song, a story not at all about his guitar...everyone else has made it about the guitar

Not sure I can agree with this either. Plenty have made songs that feature guitar including these two gentleman. In this instance Zack went off the boil.

No.

Just once, I'd like to hear Joe (and whomever he's invited up) play this warhorse at about 1/2 speed; then we'd be able to understand how musically inventive the players are.

IMHO, this is applicable to a lot of those "guitar heroes", with exceptions of course. Doesn't mean it's bad, just more geared towards a certain demographic with a guitar centered approach to music. Nothing wrong with that but certainly not MY cup of tea.
